Just put one foot in front of the other and soon you'll be walking along.

Took a little 5 minute break from the wiring to install the parking brake handle. Greased all the little bits. Clickity clackity click. Very satisfying ratchet sound. Its the simple things that pacify a racing mind.

Wow, sound deadening heaven. I left the factory tarboard on my '73's tunnel. I forget, are you staying w/stock seats?

Hi V. The factory tarboard on the tunnel was partly missing and failing here so I cleaned it up and used the excess scraps of quickroof on it. Stock seats it will be. I have some foam and covers to refresh them if I make it that far.

One step forward, two steps back today. Had good success cleaning and regreasing the wiper motor gears. The factory grease was drying out so I replaced with regular grease on the worm drive and thin dialectic grease on the face of the gear where the electrical contacts ride.

Here it is with the bracket painted, pivots oiled and ready to go in the car.

I put some grommets in the holes, and was feeling pretty good right about here.

Then, in wiggling the assembly through the holes, I damaged some paintwork. Ugh. Feeling a little sick right about here.

I know when to step back. I'll see what the missus has on the tube tonight and hit it with a fresh head tomorrow.

Filled the pillow holes with closed-cell foam, which cannot absorb or retain moisture - unlike the original foam.

Installed the tarboards and engine seal for an easy win, getting the bassinet ready for a new baby.

The defroster switch has been repurposed to fire this relay, which powers a single driver's side rally light.

German one-light rally heritage.

Having been occupied by daily driver wrenching obligations, I noticed dust accumulating. So, I took a moment to make a tiny bit of progress. Drilled two holes, painted the exposed metal with base and clear, and mounted the bracket for the windshield washer kit. Sealed the bolts with RTV. Wired it too (not pictured).

The paint has been repaired. The windshield wiper assembly has been installed and wired. All is well again with the space-time continuum and we can move forward.

What thickness steel did you use for the strut flange mounted bracket?

Its part of a strut bar kit from Topline, and it appears to be 6.5 mm thick.

Wow Buggeee I finally got around to reading through your build and this is crazy impressive. So many things that I wish I did to my car, like thoroughly fix all of the rust like you did. My dream is someday to be able to do a pan off resto on another bug. I see that you have a lot of Eastwood stuff, I have really enjoyed using their products. That internal frame coating especially, along with my MIG 135. Hopefully you can get her back on the road soon!

Buggee, I love this thread. From a fellow '72 Super owner this has been very inspirational to read while I wait for parts.

I don't know that mine will ever be this clean, though. Very Happy

Did you find any strips of metal along the edge of your windshield opening? The strips are made with cut-outs on the edge so they can be shaped to fit in the curved area of the windshield opening. If there were any there should have been one at the top that also held the headliner in place plus strips on the sides and on the bottom.

According to what I have read, the strips were put on to reinforce the edge of the opening and the original windshield rubber had a groove that fit over the strips. I also suspect that the original weatherseal in combination with the reinforcement strips helped to hold the rubber and glass in the opening in the event of a frontal crash.

I too have a 1972 Super that came out of storage in Germany in 2012. The windshield rubber and the rest of the rubber was replaced but it doesn't fit over the reinforcement strips properly. The rubber originally had a wide aluminum or stainless steel trim that was almost as wide as the rubber. I have some pictures I will add to this. See if they look familiar to you. Thanks.

I am so sorry I am neglecting my thread and just now read your post!!!!

My salvage bug did not have those metal strips and did not have the original window rubber so I suspect they were long gone. I have never seen those before and learned something new today looking at your pictures.

I have not made any progress recently, other than dismantling an old 1600 dual port to build another engine for this bug with the case and heads. I've got to get it line bored now and start assembling it. When I get to that point (if my maker is willing) I will post some pictures just to check in.

Thank you for your post. Smile

Edit, I can't resist posting this as my crew is passing it around this week and I am insanely jealous of both your rides. You have created quite a quandary in this following analysis with your picture of the cousins next to each other in the driveway

Well this bug is not going to build itself, although I've given it every opportunity.

Posting some token progress, not perfection, to get back in the groove. Getting the wings out of the metalwork so I can start sanding again.
