Hi all,
I've owned bugs and busses and I've been really falling in love with type 3's. I have sold my bus and have nothing to tinker on, unfortunate I know. My question lies with transporting a squareback. We own a Jeep with a tow hitch, I've never towed a car myself, it's only an hour drive, Id love to do this myself. Would something like this work?

If so, is anything else needed? Does this type of tow bar lift the front wheels off the ground and just simply pulls it rolling the back wheels?

It does a flat tow with all 4 wheels on the ground. I can't think of a safe way to use that type on a type3. You could take the bumper off and rig something but thats not really safe. It needs to attach to something solid
get a trailer. or a real tow dolly at minimum

I do have a friend with a modified tow bar like jeremy rock jock makes for buses, longer for type 3's. Bob has an adapter for a super beetle tow bar but you'd need a type 3 to really mock it up. For one time use, the uhaul dollies are worth it

Awesome. Good to know! At first glance I was thinking of just renting a Uhaul tow dolly, or buying a used one. Then I saw this and wasnt sure how it worked. I'll keep an eye out for a rental or or good used dolly.
It's ok to tow a Squareback on a two-wheel dolly rolling it's rear wheels? Dragging from rear wheels, in neutral I assume. |

I have towed automatic transmission squarebacks with the rear wheels on the tow dolly, but you can only do about 50 mph before they will start to shimmy!
I towed one AT square 300 miles with the axles disconnected from the wheels at 65 mph.

I was going to say that, along with watch your speed, as most of the weight will be off the dolly. I only say that as I've towed my 64 T-34 Ghia (on a dolly) from Des Moines Iowa to Port Huron Michigan (about 900 miles) before, and getting speed up (above 70 going down hill) caused it to wag it's tail. I've also towed a Notch (on a dolly) from Boise Idaho to Port Huron Michigan before, but that car was loaded up with parts needed to rebuild (spread the weight out more evenly) it as was my truck. I always dolly a car with the rear tires on the ground.
