Thank you Bob for your comment on the nob. It looks like I need the earlier version 311827535 which is held by a small screw. I guess I might need to 3D print the part. It doesn't look lie it is available anywhere. But, who knows part do pop up. I'm picking up NOS sill trim on Friday |
I didn't know there was an earlier version of it, but then a lot of the early cars got a lot of one off parts. You might try asking Jason (aka Notchboy) if he has an early knob, or might know where to find one. I only mention him, as he's hoarding a bunch of early parts. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

@vwpieces: Thank you very much for the dimensions. That will be a nice challenge to figure out how to make it. 3D Printing is certainly the easiest way, but it looks like the original is made of aluminum or some other silver colored metal.
I'll have my son draw up a 3D model and then I'll decide how to proceed.
@Bobnotch: Ya, it is crazy how many change VW made in the first few years. Just think of it took them 5 iterations to end up with disk breaks. And not enough they even had two different calipers. That is 6 different front breaks in 12 years _________________ - Michael

Yeah, as Tram and Russ used to tell us, the type 3 got all of the experimental stuff first. Like the bigger engine size, dual carbs, dual port heads, then FI, the biggest brakes of all models (first in 5 lug, then 4 lug composite), then the 12 volt option first (police and fire), then across the model line, and things like that, plus dual circuit master cylinders, with 2 different versions of them with 68-70 then 71 on, or tie rod ends getting larger in 67, then inner front wheel bearings changing in mid 68, or IRS being introduced in mid 68 with AT, then becoming standard in 69 for most countries (swing axle stayed available thru 73 as a heavy duty option). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Time again for a bigger update.
I have been dealing with my doors. both of them had or have a lot of bondo. I fixed the passenger side, but the driver side is too bad for my liking, at least at the moment. I got a NOS door really cheep, it is the correct replacement door, but not a year correct one. It is what VW would have sold to me in the late 60ies. It will do for now.
I was able to pound out the worst of the dents on the passenger side. I didn't need a lot of new bondo.
I also rebuilt the doorstops:
On Saturday a friend of mine helped me pull the body off of the pan:

Oh I have been lazy, but mostly just in updating this thread.
I have made some progress since we pulled it apart. I am getting close to finishing the welding on the driver side.
I also finished the inner rocker and heater channel for the passenger side, first I salvaged and repaired the heater tube:
Then I installed it in the inner rocker which I had previously made and made the inner layer of the rocker assembly:

I am really bad a keeping this thread up.
I have been plugging away on this car and I am slowly getting the body ready.
I have replaced both rockers. I was lucky to get my hands on a good used one for the left side. And I was able to make a mirror copy of that for the right side.
I still have two areas which are causing me a headache. The PO. replaced the rear corners including the bumper brackets. Unfortunately he did not manage to get it right, actually its way off. The parts were welded in about 1" to far forward and tilted the wrong way. But see for your self:
Unfortunately I have nothing to go by to get it right. I would be really happy if someone could help out with some good picture of this area on an original early notchback. _________________ - Michael
