Was hoping to find a bad main seal as the cause of an oil leak but no such luck.
I probably didn't seal up the case good enough, oh well I'll just deal with it for now, motor was running fine so I'm not going that deep yet.
But it wasn't a waste of time, end play was outta wack so at least I got that back in spec.

Relocated the fuel pump to a better location today, directly over the J tube was probably not a good idea.
This spot will work out a lot better, fuel lines are already there and will help clean up the engine compartment.
I should probably run the ground wire up to a switch on the dash while I'm at it.
This looks like a good spot.

You do know those low pressure electric pumps make better pusher pumps versus puller pumps right? I'd try and mount it under the fuel tank behind the front beam. At least that's where I mount them on my own cars. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah I know it should go up front but it was working just fine even where I had it before, gravity will get fuel to it where it is now and the old lines hooked right up.
If this pump gives me any trouble I'll get a rotary one from CB and put that one up front.

I'm wondering if your oil leak wasn't from the trans input seal, as the back of your engine looked dry, as did the flywheel. Unless you were having to top it up every so often, then it might be a drain plate leak.
I know you had to pull the trans for jumping out of gear. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

It doesn't smell like gear oil but I'm gonna check that out just to be sure.
Another thing is this throw out bearing clip, this thing was gonna let go soon. It broke off after I took this pic, must've been rubbing on something.
As for the ( I think diagnostic plug ) one large red/white stripe wire went to the starter, a small brown ground and a 2 prong plug . . All of them connected to nothing.
Pull those out and stuffed the rest of it into this hole leading to the fender. Now it's at least out of sight.

Replaced the hand brake with one I found at the Bug in.
Didn't realize it at the time but its about 2 inches longer.
I was never happy how this one was working or barely working,
Even after new cables, brake shoes and all adjusted properly it always felt way to hard to for my liking.
I was really just looking for one without that balancing bar thing to hook up the cable to.
I lucked out with this one being longer . . Feels a lot better now.
Made some nylon bushings to help center the cables better.

Just a heads up, but hang onto your shift rod (hockey stick), otherwise you might run into trouble getting the new trans to shift (getting all gears). I only say that as the type 3 shift rod is all by itself. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

You know what?? that's not a bad idea, think I'll swap it for a type 1 before turning it in for the core charge.
I got a few tyoe 1s laying around. |

Was gonna wait until tomorrow morning to get the trans in but you know how that goes.
Front mount and throw out bearing on and filled with gear oil.
Front mount fit snug but loose to test the shifter, will fully tighten after motor is back in and hanging on its own.
CV bolts and starter in, will tighten all that up in the morning.
Now it's time for a sandwich and a brewski, ready for the motor first thing in the morning. |

Well things were going so well with the Squareback lately my luck had to run out eventually.
These 2 pics were taken about 5 hours apart, I have never in my VW life had such an issue simply putting the motor back in.
That last inch just didn't wanna slide on and believe me I tried all tricks in my bag, It just took forever to get the splines to engage.
I should've been driving it already but oh well stuff happens.
I'll finish up tomorrow, I'm exhausted and sunburnt.

Finally got it dialed in, new trans on it's maiden voyage.
Shifting was really stiff at first but getting better by the mile.
Stopped by the skatepark for a quick spin.
Then took the squareback by the round house . . LOL
