I just bought a rail buggy and the roller pedal is very sloppy, appears to need some washers in it. I am going to take it off the pedal base and when I reassemble it, here's the main question : when putting it on, does the longer tab of the pedal arm go towards the front of the vehicle or the rear? I think mine is on backwards because the pedal (at idle) sits so far forward of the clutch and brake pedals. Shouldn't they all be at the same rest position-lined up with each other? The tab on the bottom of the arm controls the resting position. (I built one of these 30 years ago, sold it and have now returned to my roots. Looking forward to having fun with this thing.)
Also, due to the steering wheel being in my lap, I am relocating the mounting bearing bracket from the bottom of the windshield frame to the top. This changes the angle of the steering rod and it will interfere with a cross brace down in the front. I am planning on cutting the rod shorter and adding a u joint down at the gear to give it the slack it needs to clear the brace. I've already spoofed this using a wooden dowel rod and it looks fine and will give me the clearance it needs. My question here is: should I be adding and another bearing support to hold the rod-near the joint? It was a straight rod before and did not need it, but now with a joint and angle in the rod, I feel it needs more support, probably just on the top side of the joint headed towards the steering wheel. I've seen many pictures of rail buggies with steering rods that have u-joints in them, especially for ones with rack and pinion steering that have no further bracing. Just seems to me it won't be as stable as it should be. |
