the French Connection has quite a few vw,s during the car and L chase I seen at least 3 which is surprising for being shot in New York |
Why would that be surprising? I grew up in NY in the '50's - '70's and they were everywhere, along with all kinds of other foreign cars. |
Here are many Beetles from this movie. I've also added Splittie and Bay Window Type 2, Type 3, and Ghias from this movie into the respective Forum "Movie" threads.
New York City police detectives "Popeye" Doyle and his partner Buddy Russo (Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider) are following a drug dealer suspect Sal Boca (Tony Lo Bianco) from Brooklyn to Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge. A Yukon Yellow '70 Beetle with wide chromies and a stripe kit is ahead of them.
A blue '70 sunroof sedan is just behind them in the traffic jam on the bridge:
Doyle is now chasing the assassin who is fleeing on the elevated ("el") railway over 86th Street in Brooklyn. Doyle tries to stop passing cars to commandeer them and pursue the overhead train to the next stop. The Royal Red '68/'69 Beetle does not stop for him.
Doyle succeeds in commandeering a 1971 Pontiac Lemans that was heading southbound. He turns around and drives around a parked '60/'61 Beetle sunroof.
The same Beetle is seen moments later at an intersection:
Doyle speeds along 86th St beneath the el. He swerves to avoid a turning truck, with a blue '70 Beetle parked on the southbound side.
He passes by a black on black '66 Karmann Cabrio as he speeds northbound on 86th St; the "short" engine lid script and rear bumper horizontal towel bars indicate a '66 and not a '67. Though it does look like it has the wide-track rear axle from a '67.
Beetle parked in distance as Doyle is beneath the el on 86th St.
Appears to be the same red '66 Beetle seen in 2 different locations during the 86th St. chase segment:
2 late Beetles heading southbound on 86th St:
Doyle sideswipe-collides into a wall on the right. As he drives off, 2 '62 thru '67 Beetles are in background: |

Those are GREAT! It really makes you wonder where all of those VWs are or what happened to them. _________________ .

Adam-12 TV show "Truant" (season 4, episode 7, 1971) Ofrs Malloy and Reed (actors Martin Milner, Kent McCord) spot 2 boys in a residential neighborhood during the weekday whom they suspect are cutting from school. Just before they stop the boys, Reed spots a red '69 Beetle parked at the curb, with its rear abnormally high- there is no engine. They call in the license plate, which was recently reported stolen. Malloy comments "the interior was picked clean". They see scrape marks on the ground leading up the driveway to the house garage. Not easy to see here, but the VOLKSWAGEN engine lid logo was taped over.

1972 Karmann Cabriolet in "Columbo: Murder with too many notes". TV movie from 2001, season 13, episode 4. Los Angeles police homicide detective Columbo (Peter Falk) investigates the murder of a young musician Gabe McEnery (Chad Willett) who was the understudy of famous movie studio composer and conductor Findlay Crawford (Scottish actor Billy Connolly). McEnery drives a '72 Cabrio; the color can be described as "baby poop brown" (356 Maestro Harry Pellow). Here he drives into the studio and parks in front of the Crawford's office bungalow. Sun visors removed. |

Another Cabrio in a "Columbo" TV movie, this time a Sea Blue 1966 in "Suitable for Framing" (1971). Painting student Tracy O'Connor (Rosanna Huffman) assists her art critic colleague Dale Kingston (Ross Martin, best known for playing Artemus Gordon in the 1960's TV series "The Wild Wild West) to steal some valuable paintings from Kingston's wealthy uncle. Kingston murdered the uncle at his estate; O'Connor came shortly afterwards and stayed behind to remove the paintings.
Soon after, they meet up again for the transfer of the paintings. Kingston's black car is a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 b "Adenauer" Sedan. IMDB lists the location as Beverly Hills, California. BH is several miles inland from the coast. The apparent ocean to the upper left of the 2nd shot below would be more indicative of a Malibu hilltop road. My guess of the background road and landmarks but not supported by GoogleMaps, would be Malibu Canyon Rd with the large HRL laboratories building. Those would place the car location on a fire road to the northeast. |
