Huh, I never thought of those techniques beyond my silo.

Removed paint from our new fan shroud:

It seems we finally have a headlight switch with a working dimmer, people!

I don’t recall if I have tested its other features yet though…. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Lube, heat, malleting, in!
Will trim seal later.
Time to run the rear wires.
Need new seals for license light housing and rear taillights.
Some better than others to order?
And now for something extra special:
Yep, they are pop-riveted in. Feels like I am dealing with a flipper on every turn doesn’t it?
So drill them out, clean up the threads, and look for screws that fit?
Or are they just wrong and I need these:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2461599
At least the wiring was neat and professional:
As I have refuted before, rewiring is not just about wires. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Drill out the rivets, find a screw/bolt and nut to match, like the lower one. Don't waste money on another set of tail lights when all you need to do is replace the rivet, you would still need to take the rivet out. If they worked before, taking a rivet out won't make them not work.
Wiring definitely sucks, but when you finally get it completed, you will truly feel a sense of accomplishment, trust me.
You definitely got screwed by the PO or should I say POS, but you are not alone. Fix what you can, keep driving on. All the work you did will let you know YOU did it right and will intimately know every piece of that Ghia, that's the payoff.

Fun pep talk Jeff!
But don’t misread me— I don’t need it. Having the time of my life working on our car.
Just wondering if the housings are original or something off, say, a Messerschmit KR200. Happy to keep them if they belong. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Eye-opening!
Clearly ours are odd.
Looks like the oldest with something grafted on.
And a bunch of unused stuff bent out of the way out the back.
Clearly for different bulbs — 6volt?
—
So, on the hunt for correct housings. Until then, they will stay as they are and I will wire them up the best I can for now. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Or maybe keep ‘em and bring them back to festoon bulbs?
I love the concept but why do I think someone is going to say something like “why not just use birthday cake candles if you are looking for dim light to die by”? _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Then again, I won’t be able to recreate this photo with the current housings:

I dunno, but whatever it is, I am compelled to do it.
Seems to be one of the main symptoms of Karmann Ghia Fever. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Wow! Pop rivets! I don't know if that's being lazy? Stupid? MacGyverish? Getting rid of them will at least save your reputation so no one ever thinks that you did that!!
You're really doing a great job of straightening out this car. _________________ Marc

As someone who is also trying to undo an epic piece of pop rivet fuckery, I can assure you that “MacGuyver-ish” ain’t a worthy description. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Unfortunately you are missing the bracket to install the correct 58-59 rear bulb holders There should be a bracket spot welded to each side inside the fender that the bulb holders are bolted to. I would stick with what you have. In order to install the correct holders you would have to find the brackets and have them welded in. Maybe something to consider further down the road, but for now make them work so you can enjoy driving your Ghia. |

Huh, bummer.
But it does sound like a good first welding job! Isn’t there a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Welder, Jr (TM) that might be suitable for me?
But, yes, let’s move on and look forward to that fun in the winter. Will keep eyes peeled for correct housing though…
Thanks again Loren for sharing your knowledge with this knoobie! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Negatory! Thin metal is never a good place to try starting your welding experience, especially expensive, rare parts/cars. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
