I own a 71 squareback. It's totally rust free and very original. The engine is clean as it gets. However it was repainted. I bought it from a place that kept it inside. I have had it inside my climate controlled building for the last 10 years.
Added some fuel and it started up and idles well.
Question: It it possible to to know if the odometer is actual, or if it has turned over? Would there be a mark on the odometer indicating over 100K ?
Even the interior appears original,as well as the engine cover insulation.
Have a feeling it was worked on to make it this clean.
The only rust on the car is a small area under the battery.

If I decide to sell it would like to know the actual condition.

Thanks for any help.

No way of knowing if it has been rolled over. You can set the odometer to any mileage you would like. Ad some photos of it like the pedal as they show wear.

I trashed the old carpet, and must have done the same to the pedals. I removed the interior to strip it down for inspection and detailed cleaning everywhere including every corner inside the door panels.
I'll put new carpet in it and put it back together.nHe radio is missing as well as the antenna.
The more thought I gave to it, It can't be a 38K mile car.
It's no show car by any means, and the repaint tells me it's not all original.

It is very clean and worth getting the door dings out etc.
Considering the odometer reading is worthless, just won't know more than whats visible.
Sure am surprised that old of a fuel injected engine starts and runs as well as it does.

What's the date on the hoses? Were they replaced before you bought the car 10 years ago? Do you have any pictures of it from when you bought it? Just asking, as those are ways of dating it.
Yes, it's possible that it has 38K on it, as my 64 T-34 only had 42K miles on it, and it had sat in a junk yard for 28 of those years. The interior was shot due to being exposed to the weather and small animals that made it it's home. The original owner had it regularly serviced, so I was to verify the mileage. He even had the mileage logged in when it was shipped to Seattle, and the mileage he put on after it came to the states.
I hope this helps, and gives you some ideas on researchiong it some more.

It's hard to say without documentation.

I've had a few low mileage cars (40-50K miles) and there was no doubt because almost everything was original and in very very good condition. Original VW-embossed muffler is often a good indicator but also not a guarantee if you live in a rusty area. Original shocks and tie rods can indicate originality.

On the other hand I've seen a 30K mile Squareback that was pretty wrecked inside it from being outside in FL but it still looked legitimate because it had the original carpet with very limited wear where the heel sits and a ton of other very original attributes like unripped seats that would be unlikely for 130K.

Can you put up some pictures of the car? That might help. A repaint could mean that someone scratched the paint bad, got keyed, hail damage, etc.

My 36K mile 1970 Squareback was trashed, but it was last registered in 1976 when I got it and no way it had 136K miles. But the body is covered in rust spots, dents and scratches from being put in a barn with stuff stacked on top, mice making it their home and being very humid where it was at, but it feels super tight and drives like 36K but the rest of the car wouldn’t show it. Also, the seat covers were pristine when I got it but started to tear in short order from people getting in and out.

Confused the mileage with another car. It reads 19K , which doesn't seem possible. The more I look the car over it is more like a 119 car.
I'm a little surprised it is as clean as it is, but the headliner, etc is probably been replaced.
Inside the front hood, as as good as it gets, as well as the engine and compartment.
Runs and drives well and a good solid example of that.

Thought maybe is was a low mileage original. It appears to be almost original, but someone did some work to it. No body filler.
Appears to be increasing in desire, more than my ghia convertible. Need to decide which one to keep. The squareback is more plain, but it is a cool car. No one inmy town south of Nashville will know what it is.

Unless you have documentation to show history from new to support the claim of original mileage, there's really no way to know.

Given that we are now 50 years out from 1971, the idea that the car has been driven less than 100K miles in that time would seem to be pretty unlikely.
