Ok, ran the back wires behind the tar boards to the left rear light, pulled what was necessary through the hole in the tar board, ran the wire to the right rear light, and along the hood to the license plate light.

Also hooked up the coil (left the wire to the condenser as it seems fine and no new one was supplied). I think I figured out the two wires that need to run from the voltage regulator to the generator (leaving the VR where it is until we get our new generator). My intent is to hook up the new wires on top of those connections on the generator. My hope is that we can still run the car with the generator and VR as they are but using the new wiring. I was surprised that the thick red and black wire did not have a ring terminal — will have to get and attach one ourselves.

Need a screw terminal oil pressure switch but if one is not forthcoming will rig a connection that doesn’t mess up the ring terminal on the wire.

Still need to rig connections to the rear lights, awaiting a better solution. And deal with the starter connections. But it seems like we are approaching a newly wired automobile people!

Just to keep the suspense up— we are going off to a week postvax family reunion of sorts at a house on the beach. It will be difficult, but I think we get all get through this with the knowledge that we might just be on target for a Lime Rock finale.

Stay tuned!

Unfortunately you are missing the bracket to install the correct 58-59 rear bulb holders Sad There should be a bracket spot welded to each side inside the fender that the bulb holders are bolted to. I would stick with what you have. In order to install the correct holders you would have to find the brackets and have them welded in. Maybe something to consider further down the road, but for now make them work so you can enjoy driving your Ghia.

Just happened onto this picture of a 59 Tail light area showing the bracket that is missing.

The tail light bracket is spot welded in place. If you are feeling creative there are several YouTube videos on how to make a small spot welder using parts from an old microwave. I made one and it works really well for small projects. It would work great for this application, though it would take a little touch up painting on the quarter panel to cover the spot welds. Good food for thought. It might make for a great father son project this winter Very Happy

Interesting. But I think I will leave it all alone for now. The Grand Illusion is preserved by the taillight covers. I think I met even get away with the recreated photo without too much complaint.
Thanks for the thought Loren.

Yep, if you buy a postcard you look at the picture on the front, you don't examine the back for spelling mistakes. Wink

Your Ghia makes a pretty impressive picture.

I know the manuals are not necessarily the final arbitrators, but check this out.

The rear lights in 57 or early seem to go in horizontally.

This is the first manual that has lights like ours with vertical lights.

June ‘58:

Since our car is December ‘58, I am thinking that these may be originals that have been modified. This seems more likely to me than some PO putting in older ones. I guess the definitive answer lies in the “missing” bracket. I will take a closer look…

In any case, the story is good enough for me to put in festoon bulbs, wire up the screw terminals, and call it concours.

You can kind of see the where the tail light bracket used to be in this photo.

How about you purchase two correct tail light housings and make a bracket to hold them in the fender with the original wing nut and stud. Think about how the fuel gauge is held in the dash. That is the concept here. Tail light housing thru the fender opening and they place a wider bracket with "claw" feet on the sides pulling it into the fender.

Ah, if I understand you correctly, this is a “no-weld” solution?
I think I love it!

You could fabricate the bar and use steel rivets to attach it and use the correct housings. I think the trim and seal would cover the rivets.

Got our work cut out for us people!

Dear Past Parade Entrants,

I hope this email finds you well! We are having our annual Vintage Race & Sports Car Parade to kick off Historic Festival 39, Thursday, September 2, 2021 4 – 7 pm.

In the past, racing entrants have been told that they are welcome to participate in the parade, whereas this year we made it option on the race entry form and the response has been overwhelming! I have a terrible feeling we are not going to be able to accommodate everybody as the total entry is limited to 125 cars. Due to the overwhelming amount of interest, we are going to take this opportunity to be a bit more selective on entrants.

As a way of thanking you for your previous participation we wanted to invite you to be a part of this year’s parade first!

We will be extending this invitation to our general fan base in about two weeks, so if you are interested please email me a filled out application and a photo of your car as soon as possible!

Is it just the mechanism that is different? Or is there actually a difference in the door as well?
