Did the epoxy have an open time for recoating it? Sometimes they cure so hard that any additional coats past the cure point will not adhere. Sometimes all you need to do is hit it with a red scotch brite pad, sometimes something else.

Looks great!

all went good,
I did scotch brite with 3m red and 3m grey after I have let it cure for about a week.

I followed advise from a long time painter and this morning I epoxy sealed the surface with the maximum of tin recommended by the brand, let it dry for 45 min, and after that I applied the single stage paint as follow:

- 1 very small coat let it flash for about 5-10min.
- apply the real 1st coat of paint
- wait 5-10 min and applied to final coat of paint
- DONE

I will see tomorrow when everything is fully dry and check to remove the masking tape to be ready for the outside.
crossing the finger that cure won't make things bad, but I am confident Smile

Result after applying the epoxy on the outside:

next step will be to 2K prime the outer skin.
the wheel arch will just be painted on top of the epoxy, so 2K primer and blocking will just be done one visible skin.

I might be overkill in my body prep process, but my blocking session revealed a couple of low spot on the outer skin which I had to address with metal glaze for a perfect as possible body preparation.

I am using linear blocking tools for the job.

getting closer and closer.

I just applied the 2K primer on the outer surfaces.
looking to block tomorrow with 320grit the left and right skins + face of the apron.
I will use 3m red and grey scotch brite on surfaces where I cannot use the sanding block.

I have been looking for this specific wheel for years, and was able to get 2 of them in just few days.
The one on the left will stay as is and go in the cabrio and the one on the right will be adapted to fit on my bus.
next is to buy a repro lady horn button.

quick update:
all of the front clip is not fully blocked with 320 grit and scotch brite.
the clip is now 100% ready for paint!!

I hope next picture will show that glossy L41 black paint !!.

A hell of a journey to restore things correctly and getting there.
Happy to learn and do the job from A to Z just by myself.

Next step is to body prep the left and right fender.
Last evening I put a bit of inspiration and build that basic jig on a rolling kart so I can move the fenders around adjust the height plus flip them from one side to the other in few seconds.

will be usefull for both body prep and paint and keep everything in place.

getting them side by side will allow me to be as much as symmetric as possible in the preparation.

Doesnīt matter what it came out of . Itīs a BMW steering wheel.

It has nothing to do with VW or Porsche even if some years 501/502 steering wheels do fit. Still a BMW steering wheel..
