Hey guys, I bought another Eurovan today,....came across a low mileage example that had been sitting at a repair shop for 3 or 4 years,....it has 50% leak down in cylinder #4. The owner claimed that she was climbing a grade and suddenly lost power,......she was able to drive it back to Austin which was about 150 miles from where she was when she lost power. The van starts quickly, but has a pronounced miss, and will drive, and can maintain 60 mph,...but struggles on hills.
Thought I would check here to see if there were any common failure points that would cause loss of compression on the 2.5 liter 5 cylinder engines.

There is a video on YouTube I’ll see if I can find. But basically it was a failure in the head. I’ve heard others mention having to replace the head. If you can get a little borescope camera you could also check for scoring on the cylinder walls. Worn rings you could do a wet compression test and see how it changes. But to really pinpoint have a cylinder leak down done. The. You can hear where the air is escaping. |

Thanks! Broken valve spring in this video,.......so fingers crossed that is my problem as well. Would require only pulling the cam,.....not the head.

Do a cylinder leak down test to narrow down your search. |

A leak down test was done some time ago, 50% as mentioned. I asked if they attempted to determine the source of the leak by listening at the exhaust, oil fil cap, and intake etc,....and the party selling the van for the owners did not know.
