Hey Volks,
i received a mystery small nut transmission in a trade and I’d like to swap my big nut RGBs onto it and try it out. The problem is that the drums are still on the transmission and I’m having no luck getting the axle nuts loose. I’ve tried the air rachet and also two breaker bars moving in opposite directions (one on a lug nut). The torch has been applied to no avail.
Any tricks I’m missing, or is my best bet to just mount it and pull the nuts, then pull it out?
Thanks!

Dig. Of course the tool in question is in my other bus, stuck 60 miles from here, but i can resolve that. Thanks! _________________ "You realists can stay the hell out of our office." - D. Dudas |

I had a similar issue with a spare rear end. Turned our, that the axle nut was sized on one side.
I had access to really heavy duty tools and help at the time. Which solved the problem but created a new one, we stripped a good part of the threads on the axle stub.
Knowing that I would use a grinder to carefully grind down the nut on two sides. Be careful not to grind into the threads on the axle stub. Once you are almost down to the threads take a chisel and whack the rest of the nut apart and off of the stub. _________________ - Michael

You can make one of those knocker tools by welding a piece of 1/2” plate steel to the side of your socket. I did it once when I was in a pinch and cut it off later when the knocker was found. |
