Just for some preliminary stuff....
What year?
What engine? (Running OK? Any reason to think overly rich?)
What carb? (or carbs?)
Tank, lines, fittings all good? (I once had a '95 Corolla that I found later was leaking gas from a pinhole in the tank) |

Agree. What are the details?
I have a 2127, tuned to perfection, in the 70 Bug and a lead foot! It gets a solid 11 miles per gallon! _________________ Jimbo

in an oval ? ya something is up. factory claimed 30+ mpg. even with today's crappy gas you ought to get 25+ mpg. your getting like 12 mpg. check engine condition . compression .valve adjustment. carb . timing. fuel pressure .ect.. bad fuel pump leaking fuel into crankcase.?
I think I have made it to Solvang ca. on a tank of gas ? 290 miles away .
from me driving easy . may have added 50 miles from town to be safe?
if memory is correct think I would of made it ? it was in the late 80's

Definitely something wrong. Drove from Greece to Germany and back in 2019 and averaged 29mpg (8l/100km) with a tuned a supercharged 36hp. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia - Sold

Condition of engine is unknown, as of now it is the only item on the car I havent dealt with.
So someone tell me how does one
test the fuel pressure?
What does one look for when gas leaks into crankcase?
Odor?
How would gas leak into crankcase?
Thanks for input.

My oval have done 38mpg cruising at 55mph...
Full trottle & around town down to 29mpg.
If its using that much gas, the cylinder walls must be washed with fuel, and give more wear. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

best way is to fill up, drive normally 30-45 minutes, go back to the same exact pump and fill to the exact same height. Calculate. do this with 2 or 3 pumps. Calculate Average.
pumps are not exact, temps fluctuate, etc. There is a pump near me I know is pumping more than it's counting, I can see it every time I fill my wagon or truck on that pump |

Something is wrong with your Bug too so pay attention to this thread for tips. |
I generally look for consistency - we think, the warm-up period, wastes a lotta' gas on the air cooled VWs - nineteens' not that bad - compared to our old 1955 Imperial with 354 Hemi at just, 8 mpg - Almost unaffordable with the a/c on - of coarse, back in the 1950s, gas was super cheap at .30 a gallon - love the HF at 63 mpg - that's on the highway, in 5th and at 65 mph - no VW does that well - z _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I used to commute on the freeway (38 freeway miles each direction) driving a completely stock 1956 hard roof bug and it always got right at 28 mpg going off the stock odometer with 155R15 radials. I kept track of every gallon of gas I ever put in it, this was back in the early to mid 1980s before the 10% ethanol fuel was forced on us here in California. Probably would’ve seen somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 or 26 on today’s ethanol laced fuel.
I’m now running that same exact 36 horse in a stock 1956 panel bus. It gets between 20 and 22 mpg calculated/verified using my phone GPS, again I keep track of every gallon of 87 octane I put in it. The engine now has the proper VJR4BR8 centrifugal distributor, bus oil bath air cleaner and single tip bus muffler.
If my 36 hp bus can get 20 to 22 mog there’s something amiss with a 36 horse in a bug that can’t break 20 mpg. _________________ 1956 Dove Blue Panel

I'm still using the little notebook the PO recorded how many gallons added with milage noted. He started when he bought the car in Feb, 59. It's still a stock 36 hp, 28pci, 175k miles on it.
Somewhere I have a breakdown of gas milage...over a long term. I'll see if I can dig it out. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?
