53 Preservation Help pls

Hi everyone. I have a 53 which is kept outside in a cover under carport. I would like to keep it as it is but obviously prevent further rusting as much as possible. So i am after advice please on how to do this. I have in mind light wash, buff over (brought a buffer) with something -advice on grit or cream to use pls , then wax which i was intending to use beeswax . Also should i treat the rusty areas with a rust stop before waxing? I am very hesitant to start until,i have advice so i dont make things worse..thanks

I would not use a car cover as these can rub against the paint and also trap moist air. the carport is ok provided the car isn't getting rained on as it ensures a good flow of air. maybe consider putting side panels on it to keep weather off the car. are you near the coast as salty mists wont be good?
on my 56, with thin paint and surface rust, I used owatrol oil followed by collinite 845 insulator wax. I did not use any rust converter/killer before treatment. despite my scepticism the car looks the same as it did when I got it a couple of years ago despite it being caught in the rain a few times and also some late salted roads - I live in scotland. for the underneath/inside I used clear waxoil.

people have differing opinions on using an oil type product but my experience has been positive. If you are planning on restoring the car then you may want to investigate how it would impact rust removal and new paint finishes.

HI thanks for replying. Yours looks real nice. I am in Dorset but not by the coast. Yes i think the cover did cause sweating but a ness option as carprot was not finished till late feb. Seems a lot better undef carport. Side panels for car port.. yes wil consider those towards end of summer as a autum project.

We had this '64 bus and it lived outside - no car port, no cover - just in the elements - it ran great - I still have the 1500 engine in our 1960 SC -

Anyway, it had blistering and non blistering bare paint areas - we sanded and touched-up those bad spots every year - the first year we touched up with silver Rustoleum - touched up with yellow Rustoleum, the second year- pink the third and etc... by the time, we got to the 4th year, there were only 2 blemishes with 2 dabs of black - progressively, there were less and less blemishes every year - the car's name was spot ]

To preserve a 1954 bug, we once partially- painted it with a brush and sold it that way it was a real hit - what fun - z

Hi again finally some decent weather here in uk at last so i have started to rub back the blistered rust. Now i have mixture of pitted with light rust and bare metal in these areas. Do i use grey primer or even colour match paint on these areas or just go straight on with oil and wax combo. Advice would be very welcome as i need to push on before uk weather changes thank you.

it's up to you. my 56 had some small areas of missing paint, mostly thin paint and surface rust so I applied owatrol and wax to that without applying paint.
an option would be por15 clear coat but it's not cheap.

Thanks for the reply. Thinking about it i will gomfor no paint as i will prb make a hash of it. So i rub back the worst then going to give her two coats of 50/50 ow oil the stuff u usd and linseed oil, then a beeswax top coat .

May I suggest you go to paint and body forum, start at rust prevention, sort it out from there.
