Yes. Unlike gasoline, diesel is remarkably stable (unless water gets into it). On stock diesel vans there is no charcoal canister or evap recovery. The line on the gas vans that runs back to the charcoal canister is just open to atmosphere at the front frame rail. |

The fuel tank, expansion tanks, rollover valves are all the same. On gasoline vans there is a plastic tank vent line that runs back to the charcoal canister. On diesel vans that line is cut short and is open to atmosphere. |

Thanks for posting this. I've been working on diesel gas tank and had the same question.
Do you need to add a lot of hose for the breather hose? Does it matter? and should anything be placed on the end? _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

On the diesel vans, the tank side of the cut at the arrow is the same. The line going to charcoal canister and the canister are removed. |

I did chat with a member a while back, Zeitgeist_13 who simply removed the expansion tanks altogether, ran the 1/4ID expansion lines up the B pillar and put 1/4mm fuel filters on the end to keep water/contaminators out.
very interesting idea; to remove the expansion tanks entirely _________________ -------------------------------------------------

I removed the expansion tanks on my tdi conversion. I actually just connected everything to the overflow vent so it allows all the air to leave the tank as you are filling it. Btw VW used to add an expansion vent on its TDIs. It eventually eliminated them. Diesel really doesn’t expand much and doesn’t product much in the way of vapor pressure. |

I cut the end off of each Beetle fuel filter to keep out the mason bees and wasp nests. Think of them as mini K&N cone filters stuffed high up in each rear pillar. _________________ Casey--

I just removed the Charcoal Canister mainly to get it out of the way. Seems I needed that space for something. Everything else is still there. _________________ '84 Vanagon Tin-top, ALH TDI. 1989 Tin-top
