Took the front seat out and fit my 14 foot prone paddle board in with about 1/4" to spare at the back window.
I have roof racks, but strapping that thing in at 5am is annoying. So it's nice to have this option.

First camping trip with the van, since completing the 1.8t swap. Fairly local trip (about 100 miles round trip). The van did really well. Also first time camping with our 3 year old shih-tzu/bichon mix pupper. He loved every minute of it!
Got to test out the new NAPA awning as well. I am very impressed with it, especially for the price. Seems to be good quality, and look forward to using it much more in the future.

Today the van comes to our rescue during a prolonged power outage. A hot lunch was saved courtesy of the LFP battery and inverter powering an Instant Pot, and a bit of jumpering in the mains breaker box provided a living room fan while it was 101°F outside.

My kids asked me why I wave at other Vanagons on the road. I told them it's because their Van started today too, and it's something to be celebrated.

Brought home a nice 11' hunk of utile mahogany to be milled into door casing for a room remodel. This is the trial piece and we'll get more if this works out.

I took a test drive!
After a big week of repairs and maintenance, it was time to see if the AC, cooling system, tranny, and brakes were functioning as they should. This test requires a big hill in mountainous territory......
My wife noted the people sharing our experience:
I was more concerned with the goal:
The top of Pikes Peak! We made it! 14,115 ft high, with the AC running the whole climb! I was so excited to get the 35 year old Hantawagen to the top!
BUT, In our moment of glory, we were shamed. Look what we parked next to. It has it's original stock motor, just like we do.
Can you believe this? We were outdone by a 50+ year old Bay Window. It was roughly a '70 with a type 1 engine. I had a '72 Westy. This Bay was older than that. It had made the 1000 mile drive from California.
The Pikes Peak Summit is under construction. The Bay owner said his van was so slow he had to yield to and was passed by a piece of "treaded" construction equipment.
P.S. I'm not the guy in the picture.
A better photo of the intrepid Bay:
The good news is everything worked. No overheating or leaking of any fluids.
On the way back, about 8 miles down, there is a brake check station. You must stop and have your brake temperature checked. If you exceed 300 degrees they make you park a while. We flew through the station at a mere 126 degrees. The secret is to run your AC on the downhill. It works like an engine brake. |

Well, 85 miles after the upper and lower ball joints were replaced, my clutch slave cylinder took a poop in the middle of a restaurant parking lot. took a bit, but got it into first and limped back the needed 5 blocks. Easy fix, just time consuming. _________________ '87 Syncro Adventurewagen

The WonderVan dropped about 2 cups of coolant on the garage floor overnight. With two more
late nights this week, I guess I'll be driving the Prius until I can look at it this weekend...
