I posted on here a few weeks back about an issue that I’ve been having. I’m on a rather long trip (putting a lot of miles on my recently rebuilt 1.9 liter) and the engine will randomly shut off, especially but not limited to when I’m slowing down, downshifting, or going down a hill (inexplicable, I know). I called a mechanic back home who I trust and he swears he’s had the same issue and it was caused by a bad ignition control module. It’s $150 for the part which is kinda spendy if it’s NOT the cause but if it is I’ll gladly pay that to feel safe driving down the road without losing power. Anyway I opted to buy the part and am planning to swap it out tomorrow. My question is this—it seems like a straightforward switch. Unplug wire harness, dismount old part; mount new part, plug in wires. Five minutes and it’s through, correct? I just want to make sure I’m thorough so if anyone has any input for this here greenhorn I’d really appreciate it!

Thanks

It should bolt to an aluminum plate. Ideally you’d use some paste to help heat transfer from the module to the aluminum plate. Otherwise it’s straightforward. It might be easier to remove the aluminum plate and transfer the new module and reinstall the assembled assembly. Hope it fixes your problem. Having a spare module is not a bad idea even if it proves intermittent.

I can attest to the Ignition Control Module being a quick plug and play. I recently installed one to help trouble shoot a bad start issue with my 1.9 WBX. However, depending on which one you get, you may have to use self tapping screws in different locations, as not all of the heat sink holes are in the same locations on aftermarket units.

After replacing a bunch of things, it turned out to be my coil. Possibly check that before you drop the cash on something twice the price.

Cheers!

it's an easy swap that is plug and play.

there's an issue where the heat sink paste dries up on the ignition module and causes the ICM to overheat and go flakey. the cure, if the module isn't fried completely is to disassembly it from the aluminum heat sink, clean off the old heat sink grease, and re-apply new.

put the new module in and carry on. but don't throw the old one out... clean it and re-apply heat sink grease and keep it for a spare, preferably after giving it a good test.

Last one I got was less then 15 bucks on eBay. Not OEM, possibly made in Israel. Works fine.

Yeah you know I found one on GoWesty at around $40 but right now I’m in the middle of nowhere Virginia and that’s what OReilly is charging..
