I used to commute on the freeway (38 freeway miles each direction) driving a completely stock 1956 hard roof bug and it always got right at 28 mpg going off the stock odometer with 155R15 radials. I kept track of every gallon of gas I ever put in it, this was back in the early to mid 1980s before the 10% ethanol fuel was forced on us here in California. Probably would’ve seen somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 or 26 on today’s ethanol laced fuel.
I’m now running that same exact 36 horse in a stock 1956 panel bus. It gets between 20 and 22 mpg calculated/verified using my phone GPS, again I keep track of every gallon of 87 octane I put in it. The engine now has the proper VJR4BR8 centrifugal distributor, bus oil bath air cleaner and single tip bus muffler.
If my 36 hp bus can get 20 to 22 mog there’s something amiss with a 36 horse in a bug that can’t break 20 mpg. |
Valid points - but I would not want to rely on an air-cooled bug or bus as my daily driver - I at least want cruise and air - gimme a Civic any time at 50 mpg - oh boy, that ethanol is optional in Oklahoma and I never purchase it - I prefer non-ethanol at .30 more a gallon.
I don't rely on the VW - is just for fun. So, 19.2 mpg is acceptable thank you - z _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Our completely stock, 6 volt and all, 1963 Beetle usually gets 36-38 mpg. The engine is a mix of parts from 1961-1965, and she runs on Nankang NA-1 165/80-15 tires. The 30hp shouldn't get that much worse mileage than a 34hp. It should be able to get a lot more than 19.
My heavy 1971 1302S usually gets 28-32 mpg. Her overall average seems to be 30. She runs on the same kind of tires as the 1963 and has a stock 1600AD. I should also mention that the speed limits in my area are usually quite low (30-50mph). _________________ 1971 1302S - Miss Blue
