Not exactly a big surprise, but the car has developed a few leaks - the worst of which is the transmission I drove the car onto a couple of ramps to see if I could learn anything...

Here's where the transmission leaks - I'm thinking maybe the little plugs (not the 17mm drain plug - but the three small inspections dowell plugs) are weeping but I'm not sure. Frustrating think is that when I really cleaned it up and left it on the ramp for a couple of days it did not leak AT ALL... As soon as I drove it down off the ramp 30 feet and parked it again, it started leaking a lot - and not just from the driving, but continuously while parked for the next several days

I had that transmission leak in my '64. Took me forever to find it. I was able to replace the plugs without pulling the trans., but it was tricky:

Not many nice days lately - finally had a chance to take the Ghia out today. Still working on the interior restoration and those dang door latches are still not working well - very hard to adjust them

Working on the interior - just installed the dash pad -
I wanted to match the retro cool diamond pleat and found some good material with foam padding behind it. I made a full-size paper template and used it to cut out plastic corrugated board carefully reinforced and wrapped it up!
Uses the grab handle and two more existing holes for a secure fit. The vents need finishing still - decided to cover the speaker - alternative solution is in the future.
Doors are next - i have the old existing black pleated vinyl for the doors BUT I'm going to replace the cardboard backing with ABS panels. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Ok- doors were not next - did the floors first!
Happy that the original floors were decent enough to just scrap and wire brush before coating with Rust Bullet and black enamel without cutting and welding! There were some badly pitted spots and some pinholes but given the overall level of restoration on this particular car- I am happy with the results.
The rubber mats from Karmann Ghia Parts and Restoration fit perfectly! I laid them over Kilmat sound deadening material- I will probably put some of those in the doors before I put the panels back on👍 _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Those mats look great! And I love the dash pad. I have been debating for a while about spending the money on a new dash pad when the rest of the car is such a “driver”. This gives me encouragement to make my own. |

Great thread on the Second Chance Ghia. At this point in my life a VW driver is my goal, I have been down the "Show Car" road too many times. Doing a 67 bug this time around... |

Thanks guys!
Just need to get to those door panels next - also having my garage do the install on new rear shocks next week.
It is a DRIVER for sure! Not a show car - but I really like the balance of DIY and not spending too much time and money with having a car that presents OK - wear and tear here and there -- but FUN _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Finally got the door panels reinstalled- replaced the cardboard with nice ABS plastic panels and reused the funky black diamond pleat vinyl!
Ditched the beat-up door pull armrests and went with empi pulls…

Did the certificate indicate what engine serial number went with the car? I’m holding on to what I believe is the original equipped H5 engine for my car but it is badly worn. Although if there is no official record kept of what is “original”, I wouldn’t feel so bad about passing it along or tossing it in the junk pile. |

I gave them my engine number - it was NOT confirmed as the original
"the specified engine number is not installed since the day of first delivery"
I was not sure - but checking the charts I believe my number is a bit later than the car.
- true that they will NOT give you the original engine number- _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Made it out to the first car show for this ‘63- about 40 miles each way for the trip and it performed great Port Townsend WA- all makes show- a few other VWs but the only Ghia there- fun time AND a record fair (vinyl records for sale) at the same time
