You gonna trailer it during the event too? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Depends if it keeps running . I drove a convertible Ghia from here (Illinois) to West Virginia a couple times when I was 20ish. That was a comfortable car, this is... not. Yeah I said it, Gary's tougher than me. |

Maybe I just can't afford a trailer
If the weather forecast holds, this will be a wet weekend.
I plan to put my top up on Wednesday, after I load up the car; leaving Thursday AM.
I suspect the top will stay up until I get home (Ron... Get your camera ready!)
Safe travels to all, and I will see you where the rocks are flat and the Things are many. |

It was great to see some old friends at the 2021 Kubel Treffen.
This was my first "real" road trip in my new (to me) '73.
The car ran beautifully; oil temp never over 210º and CHT never over 325º, and 22-24 MPG... BUT I had a persistent vapor lock problem that popped up at some very inopportune moments. Each time, I was able to pour water onto my "square top" fuel pump and bring the thing back to life.
Since I have been home, I have re-located the fuel hoses in the engine compartment, and increased the fuel pressure from 2.5 to 3.25 PSI. I will see what that does over the next couple of weeks; then go with an electric pump if necessary (sometimes, I miss the CIS fuel injection on my old Thing).
All in all, a fun 181 adventure, just like always.
Thanks again to our hosts, Mary & Mike Crisp for their efforts. |
