I`ve owned 3 Fastbacks, several Buses, and Bugs, and I currently own a Thing, and a 63 Bug project. but never a Squareback. Not by choice though. It just never happened..... until now. I wasn't even looking but this popped up on Facebook marketplace over the weekend. It looked familiar but the person that listed the ad wasn't the owner. They were doing it to help them out. After contemplating it for awhile, thinking things like "I don`t need it" and " I already have enough cars"... I called the number. It turns out I was right. I knew the owner fairly well. In fact I tried to buy it a few years ago before buying my 63 Bug project. But he wasn't selling. Now he was. I went to look at it the next day and couldn't say no. It`s a very clean 1968 Squareback that he had did a semi restoration over time. Repaint, new interior, rubber, refreshed engine with Solex carbs and rebuilt transaxle, and rechromed bumpers. It has the original black plates and dealer frames, along with service record and receipts from Vista Volkswagen in Goleta, California. My friend was the second owner. Its nice having something that doesn't need a full restoration for a change. I will be doing a few things to it like a slight lowering of the front, possibly a set of Fuchs, or Pedrini`s, a Berg shifter, and probably a smaller steering wheel (I`m 6'2"). But nothing crazy. Here`s a few pictures I took after I got it home.

Nice clean 68. I am surprised that it has carbs and not fuel injected.

I have a swing axle engine w/dual Solex's that came out of a '68 square in our barn.

I was told by the po that it was originally fuel injected. I’ll look around to see if I can find any signs of an old injection system. But not yet. It’s way to hot here, and I have a Thing, and a Fastback to work on first.

It was originally injected. The bullet signals and reflectors tell us so. Non FI cars continued with wrap- arounds till the debut of second- design cars in 1970.
There may be examples of 1968-9 non- injected cars out there with bullets, but these will either be cars that have had fender swaps OR *possibly* Standards. All Type 3s imported to the USA were Deluxes until towards the very end of 1973 when a version of the Standard with clock delete and rubber floor mats was very briefly offered to USA buyers.
The FI back to carbs swap is not uncommon- in fact, VW for a short time offered an "accessory" conversion kit These kits came complete with a paper element air cleaner. If you want to go back to FI one day PM me and I can set you up. The only other thing I can see that you need is an original dash pad as you have the 1971-on style. Beautiful car- you did quite well.

Agreed. When I first got Sue's Fastback, it had one of the FI to carb kits on it. The carbs worked great on it, and eventually found their way onto my 65 Notch.

I know all of that. I was just replying to Mike Fishers comment. I’ve owned three fastbacks before. And something like 30 VW’s total. But thanks for the info. As far going back to injection, that will never happen. If anything, I will build a bigger engine with a set of 40, or 45 Dellorto’s.

Since my 63 Bug project has been in body shop jail for a few years, I need to use these tires. and since I have disc brake setups already.... I think they are going on the Squareback. Along with a slight lowering of the front end.

Did a little cleanup on the Squareback this week. Nothing major. Cleaned up the trunk. Pulled out the carpet to reveal the original mats. Did a little mock-up of my Hans detailed Fake Fuchs, took the fog lights off, and gave it a bath. Needs brake work before I can really drive it though.

Thanks, I agree. If I cant find a better cardboard piece, I may just buy a new one. But for now, this will work.
