I'm eventually getting around to restoring the 1947 gearbox for my car (Both sides dated August 1946), which seems pretty good internally, except for damaged & chipped teeth on the crownwheel, requiring a new crownwheel & pinion.

So about 4 years ago, I located & bought a set from somebody in Germany, who took a long time (2/3 months) to send them to me after paying for them.

Anyway, I've had them hanging around for a while, and recently took the complete pinion assembly to a local gearbox specialist, TES Transmissions: http://www.testransmissions.co.uk/ and asked them to swap the assembly over.

Next day I had a phone call to say that this couldn't be done, as the one section was slightly longer than the original, and the end nut couldn't be tightened down enough to allow the original split pin through. The plan is to find somewhere to grind down to the length found on the original part.

Can someone more knowledgeable than myself, tell me if I have the correct pinion for the car, or is it for something else? The gear is a completely different shape/design, but that may not matter, especially as there were a couple of manufacturers later on if remember correctly. The crownwheel seems to have a date of 1965 etched into it. Any help/advice gratefully appreciated.

Having just been sifting through my copy of Scientific Publications Pre 1960, I seem to have answered my own question above by coming across a section titled Difference between the old and the new (crownwheel & pinion) sets.

It seems to highlight the differences, but I'm not sure that it offers any solution, so machining might have to be the answer.

The original workshop manual tells how the replacement pinion&ring is placed with some other necessary parts, no machining needed. I will make the same for my 48 transmission.

Is there anything you don't make?!! If you know what is required, and about to make it/them, then I shall hang on, and not get it machined.

With Mika's help, in sending me the correct later part (longer version), the pinion assembly has now been put back together, without any machining, and now ready to be fitted in the gearbox.
