Oh no there’s no guarantee or anything like that..
They offered to send a guy up, too.
My friend is a long-time friend and a really really good outdoor landscape type photographer.
He came from shooting surfers - got some in-water shots of me years ago.
Teaches at the college here..
He’s a longtime local and knows all the spots and has some great ideas about how to get the best pics you could imagine.
We have some killer ideas about shooting the car..
Going to spend days trying them all.
Like a lot of things with this car, I’m going to go way over the top with pics.
Even if they don’t make the cover of the magazine, I’ll have these pics to stare at from my hospital bed when i’m old and infirm..
Just have to get it able to drive for an hour without melting itself..

Did you boil the temp gage/sender as installed in the car?
I'm thinking the Fan sucked in the bellows, might want to fab a wire cage to support the bellows,
a better ledge on adapter and body to retain bellows and clamps.
Also plug the Oil and Air intake in the body to prevent sucking hot air,
but your build has been so comprehensive that I'm sure you have already done that.
I'm a big fan of this build, and your work !!!!!

ugg....
if those gauges are based off of VDO (or some other chinka china company) i'd verify them.
years ago being fed the fuck up with inaccurate gauges i stumbled across a company called speedhut.
their gauges are within 4-5* of what a factory ECU reports. these by far have been the most accurate gauges i have found to date....
i've tried a lot...VDO (which was always the worst) autometer, SW etc. i will only use speedhut now

I'll go ahead and catch up on all the doodoo from the last six weeks.

Little issues list is long, big issues list is long too. 
Was super stoked you looked me up while you were in town.
Totally sucks we couldn't hang out and geek on cars but such is life.
First was the impending risk of a massive fireball...
To keep the long tie rod off of the tunnel fuel fitting;
Tie rod and pitman arms were shortened.
Oddball-shaped parts were tricky to jig.
Wanted to be sure they all got chopped he same amount.
Mock-ups required due to odd parts combination;
(Tie rods were already shorter from brake conversion).
I'm no Russell Ludwig, but I'm learning enough to trust welding suspension parts now.
Start by making wide 'fill-able' gaps you can be sure fills the whole area with no voids.
Then, after some cooling, more passes.. LOTS of heat! Turn it UP! 
Here's an example of what not to do.
Gap not wide enough, not fill-able;
A void right in the middle.. 
Hard to see in his jumbled pic, but weld was ground away,
and the gap opened up enough to be re-welded and fill the void.
And, yeah, couldn't resist smoothing out all if the forging marks and getting them all powdered up.. 
Better than before.. Yeah, that's it.. Better than before.

Wanted to try and keep the muffler from scraping the driveway.
Even the slightest of angles and SSSCCCRRRAAAAPE!! 
Damon and Justin both talked me into a more compact muffler setup.
(That i still haven't gotten around to installing yet.. ).
Also (finally!) got a whole set of the -correct- Konis on premise.
050 had too-wide of a timing range;
at 28-30 full in the initial was like 4.
Bending stops brought it up to around 12 for more initial.
Gave it more beans off the mark as well as a better idle for my carb setup.
More on this later.
The thing might still need taken apart and re-greased..
Pumped an expensive tank of 110 Sunoco purple into jerry cans..
Note to self - leaded gas can kill a wideband O2 sensor.. 
Found the test parts from years ago under the orange tree..
Could it possibly be that Masterseries is holding up better than powder coat???
Lastly, at the powder coat shop,
Some Porsche douchebag was having these air filter assemblies done.
I think they are 356 or or early 912?
Might be a great way of getting some cool air into the motor.
Because,
Um,
I get the feeling my motor is ingesting hot air...

Ugh.
I get depressed just looking at this..
Clear back off and clear back apart with ALL of the brakes. 
See the little wet-weepie of leaking brake fluid under the bleeder screw?
It's not only trying to ruin my brake caliper or wheel paint,
But to also make my pedal go to the floor!
They had been over-tightened at some time in the past.
Or maybe they were wrong altogether?
Seating area got mushed and wouldn't seal.
Tightened one until it stripped because it wouldn't stop weeping..
One without bleeder or comparison.
Found a slick way to thread solid steel insert in and use smaller bleeder.
God, what a shit-ton of work.. And one still weeps a bit.
Think i might have to JB-Weld it in or something.

Here's another hero that showed up onto the scene..
Meet Jeff!
He has a patina '67 Square that he rallies all over the place.
Because he's kinda new to wrenching and all - he wanted some hands-on experience.
Let's see... 
Around back, up onto stands, wheels off, tank out, steering gear out, replace shocks..
Oh,
and,
Rear suspension CLEAR BACK APART for another torsion adjustment!!
Rear end was sagging again just TOO much!
Remember, with this goofy setup that means clear back apart.
Because e-brake cables run THRU the arms it ALL has to come apart to adjust torsions.
Jeff rallied like a champ with all of the toil that is suspension work..
Helps to have an elderly Pug to keep company.
Big thanks to my man here for doing something that i -just- couldn't motivate myself to do.
A hero that appeared just when you needed one the most...

So much for using 3d printed parts above a hot exhaust..
Helps if you don't have a massively overheated motor I'd guess.

SSooo....
In order to do an alignment on a rig like this you have to do it yourself.
Can you imagine going to an alignment shop with this thing?
Guy would be all "Now what year is your vehicle, sir?"
Work area shot:
First of all, you have to have the suspension loaded,
And then you roll the car onto a level pad going straight and use the e-brake to stop and then....
Um...
Wait...
Yeah.
We'll stop at 'suspension loaded'.
This car is so ridiculously low you couldn't reach anything even if i did have a level pad!
We'll borrow some stands instead..
Here I'm trying to use some boards as shims to get front toe-in measurements,
Plus the 'string' technique.
With the car so low everything gets in the way of the two wheels.
Karl let me borrow this killer lightweight extruded aluminum straightedge which really helped.
In the end, i needed to take one side CLEAR BACK APART again to shave some more off a spring plate.
Because one wheel was toed out and wouldn't come in.
But the other would toe in to match,
So,
While we might be dog-trackin' a tad bit,
both rear wheels are at least aligned with each other.
So we'll leave it like that.
And alignment is alignment right?
We'll shave that spring plate next time we're CLEAR BACK APART to take sag out again anyways..

Welcome back. I feel your pain. Nice to get some help to assist you in your time of need. Do you think part of the melted 3D printed part may have a little to do with that muffler? With your welding skills picking up I am a bit surprised you are not cutting that muffler up and doing some modifications.
We are still here if you need a shoulder to lean or cry on.

WOW!! What a freaking nightmare. I'm glad it's your car and not mine. It's also why I don't build show cars. I'd rather have something that I can jump into and drive to the store or across country without worrying about stone chips. Sorry, but you brought all of this upon yourself, all because you wanted the "ultimate type 3 Fastback". Sorry if I'm sounding like Tram, but...
It still looks good, and your new helper can see himself in the finish, or at least we can in the pics.

Steve... as my old man used to say "That's the price of glory". It's an asspain for sure, but you will get it eventually. You need an alignment pit for that car!
Maybe BerT3 has the right idea... build the expensive showcar with all NOS parts and the minutest of details all perfect, then put it in your living room. All problems solved! 
Seriously... you WILL get it sorted. What's another couple years?

You got that right, there will only be one Tram. I don't think the universe would be ready for two.
The ticker is doing better, passed my stress test, and dropped the Plavix and a few others, now I have a loop recorder in my chest to monitor it, and I'm finally starting to get used to the side effects of the different drugs, and getting out a little more into the shop (even with the high heat and humidity we get here). So life is starting to become a little more normal, whatever that is. How's your back doing?
I do have to agree with you on what BerT3 did, and maybe Steve should have done that, and put his time into his bus. Then he could take the boys camping or to the beach more often. I mean his car looks great, but to keep it like that it needs to be kept indoors, and get a regular dusting off (maybe get a maid to keep it clean. He could have bought a nice Porsche for what he's got into his type 3.

That pug of yours really is a sweetheart. as far as the Fasty as always amazing job! Nice to know I'm not the only one aligning my vehicle that way. the "technicians" they got at the local les Schwab, apparently don't understand vw tie rod ends or how to break them loose. amazing what an alignment and adding some negative camber will do for handling.
bummer about the bellows mount.. how frustrating. but... then again , your getting it sorted, what may be ideal in our mind may not be ideal on the car and your finding those issues. Keep at it. once you start getting in some drive time bro your gonna love it. |

Yup, that's how we used to do alignments in the truck shop. We'd use the double pointer to set toe in, caster plates for caster/camber settings, and string to check the rear axle(s). Trailers ere a little trickier, but mostly string method on them too. Old school way of doing things. With type 3s, there's not much you can do about caster, as it's built in unless you cut the frame head off and reset it. Camber is done thru the ball joints, but toe in is adjustable. I keep a 2by4 around just for checking and setting toe in.

| For the record alignment shops absolutely have these cars in the database and the lasers do their thing. It's not rocket surgery, these alignment computers go all the way back to the 40's. I seent it. |
