As my build nears completion I have an exhaust issue. Seems the bodywork hangs over the motor about even with the alternator. I do not want to run zoom tubes. I've scoured the internet to no avail.

You can run Cannon/Bazooka style Duals or a Bobtail style with a glass pack or muffler might fit...

A Manx sidewinder will probably fit. Also, go to Moore parts, and you'll see a couple of exhausts that will possibly fit. |

I've looked at pictures of buggies with the sidewinder and the bobcat, they all seem to be right at the alternator, which for me means it hits the fiberglass.
I may have to go bazooka... which i really really don't want to do.
I may look at doing a custom off the existing collector that wraps around the front somehow. I may need to bring a tape measure to a buggy show and do some measurements... |

With 1 5/8 primarys it may be a little big for a 1600.

An option would be to just add a small muffler to header you already have to quiet the system a bit...
The rear body over hang will NOT allow you to use something like TRI-MILL Bobcat because there is only about 1.5 inches from alternator pulley face to exhaust pipes...
You are pretty much stuck with something that sits pretty low...
As a side note I personably never liked a section of body hanging behind motor, its always in the way when ever you want to work on engine or pull engine...
The real reason mine is cut back like it is as previous owner hacked back end up pretty bad, and to clean things up without having to do a lot of fiberglass body restoration work it was trimmed back to be neat... _________________ “Fear The Government That Wants To Take Your Guns" - Thomas Jefferson.

I always thought a "Hot Dog" muffler for a "Thing" would look interesting on a fiberglass dune buggy.

Dale, couldn’t agree more, I’m seriously contemplating pulling out the sawzall
Cbeck that exhaust would clear but at an 1 5/8 and no muffler, it’s a no go.
Earthquake... hmmmm May need to brush up on my photoshop skills
Thanks all for your input... appreciated

The Bobcat style is totally out of the running on his without major body surgery. Here is another reason to avoid that style. Trying to tune the engine requires asbestos gloves! Ask me how I know, and I didn't even realize it was happening. Working that close to a 450* plus pipe is not ideal!
Dual cannons are not at all the best choice from both a drivability and noise pollution standpoint but if you do go that way choose a set the longest primaries you can find. The big plus to them in my mind is that they are out of the way for working on your engine. I would not run them though if you are running dual single barrel carbs, bad combination!
1 3/8" systems are best for a stock 1600 with 1 1/2" being acceptable, nothing bigger.
There are 4 into 1 systems that stay below the top of the engine case if you search long and far enough. See cbeck's photo above. Barring that there is always the mandrel bends and a welder. With some time and a bit of thought almost anything is possible. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. Think I may go with a bus exhaust, cut the muffler off at he collector, weld in a 180 to either a glass pack or muffler.
Or go cheap...

There are some things that just cannot be tweaked on a cold engine, that's all there is to it! _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. (The mass media age) |
