It's gonna be hard to go by pictures only best bet is to find the owner of Otto engine and have them give to the specs of the manifolds but I think that's not gonna be easy ...ive went threw picture of projects of others before and wanted to same look like them I didn't get the 100%maybe 70% some pictures can play tricks best bet is to ask around to see who is the owner of Otto car/engine and see if he is willing to give you the specs of the manifolds than that will for sure solve you problem but easier said than done .. your engine seem to look good so far as is yes a little differnt but it's not that bad ...but hey if your not happy now with it you will never be ... |
I've met and emailed a few people at the prototyp museum over the last few years.
I'm considering getting in touch again to see if they'd be willing to take some closeup photos of their type 64s carburettor linkages.
I know they've previously had a relationship with the owner of the Otto mathes type 64, perhaps they could pass my details on.
I'm happy with the manifolds I have, as they would suit the style of a "one off" by Porsche in that time period. I'm not sure how easy casting manifolds from alloy would've been in 1938.
So as Undis pointed out, unless a period photo of the original engine setup appears, all we have is educated guesses based on other VW's of the time _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

2nd 28vfis arrived today. While it's definitely been exposed to the elements the inside of the throat, and butterfly look as if they've hardly been used
I'm digging the funky hand controller, made by the same company who made beetle mechanical fuel guages.

Super speedy clean up and bolt on.
Eagerly awaiting the second NOS one to match the right one.
Here's Quick comparison with prototyp's first engine.
Received notification that finally a few of my parts parcels are on the move again, one has landed in Oz _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

Finally another package arrived.
Notice the linkage is different again
Also these shots might provide a rough guide into what I have to fabricate linkage wise.

Pair of odd NOS carburettors on manifolds.
Let the linkage begin.
Small parcel arrived today too
Need to thank the samba for this suggested purchase. Definitely an odd part out on this build. Feels like a piece of 80s bling, but definitely gets me closer to the look of a 38 crank. OT pulley next. _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

After an Original 356a crankshaft pulley fell through, I chose the financially responsible option. Now ISP claim to have rectified previous issues, I eagerly await their package in the mail.
Just need to find where I put my genuine pulley removing tool...... _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

Sorry I haven't updated this thread in a while.
Engine looks like this at the moment.
Stalled a little while I decide how to proceed with the linkages and exhaust choices.
Then this little nugget of original early VW goodness arrived this week. Thanks to a fellow Samba member.
I think a slight clean-up is in order. not so much that it looses its aged look.
I was toying with running the VDO version of a tacho drive oil pump as seen on the Otto mathes type 64 (see photo below)
I think the cog logo alloy cover is more correct for how the car would've been originally, plus I don't intend to run a tachometer so it'd be a waste.
I'm having some issues with the early pulley on the later generator. that may result in some issues. I did see somewhere on here that some of these pullies ran a large spacer. Not sure if that's factory or not.
See how the nut wont go on any further, and that's without the centre piece of the pulley installed. _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

It's looking nice 👍 ...i think you may have the wrong nut try using the 356 generator nut the thread on yours is longer the 356 style sits deeper .
here's an add you can judge for yourself ..I think this on may work 👇👇👇👇

Finally had some free time this afternoon.
And now have the thread poking through after putting both pulley parts into the lathe.
So now the pulley is all nice and tight.
But the 900 belt is still too long. So a shorter one will be sourced.
I'm still worried about there being 2 full sets of washers needed to max the adjustment out. Something is still amiss _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

Small Update today.
Had some lovely 8MM pumps arrive in the mail.
So I immediately began preparing mine for a full rebuild/ restoration.
Cleaned all the hardware
Then using simple 'Hot Bluing' gave these results
Then I trued the sealing surfaces by hand. Neither are finished in these photos, the contrast provides a better illustration of the warping of the parts.
I followed that with a round of media blasting.
Here it is all ready to go back together
Que the music for the Genuine VW tools
It's nice to have a 'live' before and after avalible.
Looks right at home mounted on the engine
While I had the chance, I decided to put the 'cog logo' oil pump cover in the blaster.
A decision I've wrestled with since the part arrived.
Before:
After:
I've also prepared the rear of it, for sealing onto the oil pump.
I'm glad it's pitting has been preserved. I like the age of the part showing, though whole thing will be completely hidden once all assembled. _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

Nice work!

Have you thought about "aging" your blingy crank pulley nut by first bead-or sandblasting it to take away the shine, then bluing it? I suppose you do that by heating the part up to cherry-red, then dunk it in engine oil? |

Correct, that's the method I'm using.
The issue would be the pulley is alloy _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

Any more movement on this? Very nice build so far! |
Hello,
Thank you for the kind words.
No movement recently. The engine in my 58 has taken priority.
I did consider a recently found roller crank for this build though. Unfortunately I was too slow and missed out.
Hopefully I'll get back into this one shortly.
Still need to sort fuel lines, linkage and exhaust.
I'm currently building a test stand so I can run the engine up. _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.
