I’ll be taking out the gas tank from my 1964 Beetle to switch to a dual circuit master cylinder and replace the brake lines. While the tank is out, what else should I check or replace? I’m pretty sure the tank has never been removed. |

Fuel lines for one.
Maybe get the shop vac out and clean up all the gravel and road debris off the frame head area.
Since your doing the MC. Now would be a good time to change the brake line hoses. _________________ I have learned over the years.

The steering coupler is a whole lot easier to access and change if necessary with the tank removed. I did mine on my ‘60 a few years ago. It was substantially deteriorated. Could have been original. Worth checking. _________________ 1960 beetle

Steering rod coupler, I didn’t even know there was one. I’ll add it to my shopping list. As for tie rod ends, how do I know if they are bad? |

When you grab the tie rod and twist, the linkage should feel stiff. If it feels loose, replace. Measure them very carefully, end to end prior to removal, to minimize your alignment adjustments after replacement. Also consider just replacing the steering damper while you’re in there.
Here’s what you’ll see (basically) when you pull the tank:

I'd also drain the fuel tank & rinse it out with fuel of possible debris/sediment. Also, replace the fuel filter screen at the bottom of the tank - they tend to deteriorate in time. Along with that is replacing the rubber washer at the bottom as well.
