Well, almost 7,000 miles and a dash light illuminates!
The red temperature flashing light came on today.
I was 95% sure (Now 100% sure) that it was simply my low coolant warning.
I couldn't open the tank (Aluminum, no sight glass) and look.
There were no signs of catastrophic coolant loss and the gauge was right there in the center of the LED.
I understand the cooling fan should come on with the light? I didn't notice it on but didn't listen for it either.
Page 43 http://www.westfaliat3.info/1990_VW_T25_Vanagon_And_Transporter_Owners_ManualWestfaliaT3WM.pdf
Anyway, being concerned but nearly certain that this is minor...... I went home ...... watching the gauge like a hawk!
Tomorrow when things are cool I will confirm the low coolant level. I know that I have a minor radiator leak..... I also have a new radiator still in the box.
The time may be coming to install that radiator!
When I drop the coolant I will weld on another bung in my Aluminum tank for a proper temperature gauge sender.
A second temperature reading is always welcome!
And by the sender being in the aluminum tank, it won't be sending false engine case temperatures from a dry sender.

i think a proper independent temp gauge not subject to influences from circuitry that tries to be smart is a great thing. so many car manufacturers build in modulating circuitry to eliminate variance in the temp needle... all in the vein of reducing consumer anxiety and service calls.

If you can weld and machine aluminum I would look for a thread in glass sight from a big truck . The Mack and IH coolant tanks I work on have them.

radiator fan is NOT tied in with the dash gauge or water level light.
a temp gauge sensor in the aluminum tank will show the steam temperature if you have a failure.. which is essentially just fine being 212*f
learned early on that a car that is over heating and then goes A OK on the gauge is jut reading steam in the system.. 212*f
you can buy a radiator hose fitting with a sight glass.
or the full tuner pyrex tube...

In other markets the 1.9 wbx engine was fitted through 1992.
After 85 these got the later cooling system we over here call the 2.1 cooling system, but the 1.9 version left off the oil cooler.
So many replacement later system water pumps are built with a removable pipe nipple fitting for the oil cooler hose so the same pump fits the late 1.9 setup and the 2.1 setup.
There is often a threaded plug provided for the hole when used in the later 1.9 cooling system.

Interestingly it has an screw in nipple for the oil cooler line. ....
Nice to have a spare water pump onboard and ready to travel!

dave, if i may make a suggestion on a coolant gauge....
get in line with the folks at speedhut. i have used aftermarket gauges for a long time, autometer, VDO, SW etc.
all sucked. VDO sucked the most.
speedhut is within 4-5* of a factory ECU. it has been by far the closest gauge i have found to date. they do a fantastic job of calibration.
also, you can order them with high/low temp lights you can program the on/off temps at.
fantastic company

So, I found myself running errands today.
I had mentioned my Van pulls Right and is wearing the RF tire outer edge away.
I dropped into my friendly tire store to get the RF tire dismounted and flipped so the outer edge is now the inner edge, you know buy some cheap time. The tire is trash anyway, might as well get some miles out of it.
I also know I need an alignment but suspected that I've got some work to do before that alignment.
I asked Nate to give it a once over and identify what is worn so I can fix it before an alignment.
He knows I do my own repairs so I know that he wasn't gold digging looking for work.
He didn't disappoint!
His diagnosis?
RF Upper Control Arm Bushings
RF lower Ball Joint.
Tie rods are good.
He asked that I free up rusted adjustment points before I bring it in.
Curiously the LF tire is wearing slowly and evenly!
My plan is to not touch the LF at all.
Fix the RF ..... new everything, probably T3 Technique Stuff.
Take it in and have his lasers and mirrors tell him where the LF is set,
Using the LF data, adjust the RF to the same corresponding specs.
Once we know what the "good" settings are from the left side, I'll rebuild that side at some point too.
Set to the Book settings?
Bah!
I've had too many alignments set to the book that continue to eat tires afterwards!
Interestingly, with the tire flipped with the good tread edge on the out side..... it no longer pulls right.
Coming up on 8,000 miles soon!
