Intro - 1974 Westfalia

The engine is out of a 74 914, I think that the windage tray is supposed to be there.

I was able it get to the two rod nuts, but haven’t spent much time knocking the rods loose.

Is this the crank bearing fusing to the crank and partially spinning on the set pin?

I was trying with the lifters, but messed up. If I were to put this back together, would I likely wipe the cam?

The lifters will need to be reground if you mixed them, the odd time you get lucky sticking them back in any old way, but more often than not it'll chew up the cam. More pics of the cam once it's out and clean will determine if it's recyclable.

That crank bearing seized, once it's cleaned up you'll have to do some measuring after it's bolted back together and torqued up to see if it spread the saddle in the act of smooshing that pin hole.

The bigger question is why did it seize in the first place?, was your oil light functional?

A GA motor like this one is what Porsche 914 guys all want if they don't have a 2.0 liter. I have one in your 73 914 and it runs well. You could get $1000 for a complete motor. The heads are valuable as well

I was able to drop the engine and transmission, I don’t think this is original to the 914, EA083318 - 1.7?

I am trying to get the 1.7 in the bus, but can't seem to get the last inch (again) and I've been struggling with it. I assumed it would bolt right in, but fear I am missing something. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Assuming you used a clutch alignment tool when installing the disc make sure the gap around the bellhousing flange is equal all the way around, then put the bus in gear with the brake on and turn the engine using the alternator nut to allow the clutch splines to align.

I have the engine installed, the dual carbs and intakes swapped over. She spins over freely, but I have no spark. The '74 porsche 1.7 distributor does not have point with red and black coming out of it. When I pulled it from the porsche, the red is going to ground on the coil and the black to positive on the coil, is this correct?

I swapped over the coil I was using with the 2.0 and the cap/rotor from the 2.0, they were operational.

I’m still having a hard time getting it to idle, I can hold the rpms around 2k. I think I have all vacuum ports accounted for.
How long should I let it cool before I pull the covers and check/adjust valves? I’m feeling kind 3 or 4 are missing.

Rechecked the valves at .006, still not idling. Starts right up with one pump of throttle, then can keep it at 1500+

A compression test will answer some questions. Could also be something plugging up a carb circuit, screw in the idle stops (equal turns each) so it idles super high without babysitting, then unscrew them (equal turns) until it just barely stays running. Now cup your hand over the throat of each carb gradually so you start to feel slight suction, does the engine speed increase?, or drop?, what about the other carb? Do you own a snail or Uni-syn?

Thanks busdaddy, I should have compression checked it, I will do that next.

After that I will try the carb suggestions. These two were on my 2.0 and idled,etc. I stored them in rubber made box, expecting to keep garbage out. I do have a snail and thought I had them dialed in pretty good on the 2.0.
