I was pretty amazed to see skateboarding finally made an Olympic sport, but I am confused. It looks like all they’re gonna do is trick riding, and there will be no speed races or marathon race at all.

Also I’m not seeing any half pipe or full pipe. Nothing but rail slides.

The slides are pretty awesome, but it’s getting repetitive.

It reminds me of the samba off topic forums after the rants and raves section was removed.

as I understand it, it's divided into two classes - street and park. street has urban 'furniture' and competitors demonstrate a range of tricks while riding along stairs, handrails, curbs, benches, walls and banks. park skating has its roots firmly in the drained swimming pools that skaters first used in the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles when skateboarding first emerged.

You guys don’t know my history but I was a skater since 1963. Way before pools. I never did give it up either. I was training for The Adrenalina in 2012. 26.2 miles around San Diego. Geezer class. Wink

The last race I went to was a charity event in Fresno about 12 years ago, and all these kids participated to raise money for sports safety gear.

I went across the finish line sideways in a ceremonial last place finish.

Bowl riding started just about the time I moved to California, and I joined a real skate park. But it got sued, it was closed, bulldozed, & it’s a 40 year old car wash now…

We were reduced to odd ditch riding and street outlaw stuff. We rode all the ramps on freeway 41 at night, just before they opened it. After the 70s I went to long distance and downhill. At age 66 I don’t do dramatic stunts. Fitness riding only for me.

Yes, I remember the first wave. Hobie boards, Red Rider trucks , Kryptonic white wheels, all balls no brains- ripping down Columbine St. In Boulder Colorado.

Bad place to park a car in those days.

Although we’ve never officially met, I have a family member who is competing, let’s hear it for Australia’s Poppy Olsen.

It’s another contrived sport to drive ad dollars, completely out of the Olympic spirit. I hope the weather forecast has some clouds for me to yell at tomorrow

I would also give out gold I medals only for breaking records, not the present incremental “who was best on one day in four year cycles” crap

Competing in 8 Olympics at age 46 in gymnastics. That’s Gold medal right there

abscate - there's the senior olympics and national senior games, both 50 plus, so it's not too late to for you to break some records. Smile

It bugs me that they didn't say what his age group was?
I assume 100+
Because no way is it 50+

Give it a few more years, that will probably be one of the next additions to the Olympic Games.

Records are made to be broken, so no biggie, hey? I was just out to impress all the kiddies on The Silverfish. Laughing

But the Silverfish is no more, sadly. It went dark a few years back.

I built dozens of custom longboards since 2008. I've spent lots more on skating than on my VW so far.

I watched her skate a bit. We rode in bowls, but we never thought of going so fast you could do that type of low altitude orbital maneuver.

We were not trying to get over the lip.

But there was one bowl at The Mogul Bowl which was so hot you had to be world-class to drop in. Never tried it once. More frightening than trying to ride the full-pipe. I watched a guy ride a tiny BMX bike in that bowl one day, and he was amazing. Nobody was getting the whole bike in the air!

Then the park closed. It was all hushed up. Nobody got a refund on their membership. No other notice.

I'm pretty sure somebody spattered and his family sued bigtime.

Once I get cloud yelling inserted as a sport I’m going to get cirrus and acumulus all three medals.

Skateboarding in the Olympics! What’s next? Sailing?

Over 50? That’s still kids to me

There is apparently a new rule in the skateboarding competition everyone gets a gold medal for just getting to Japan. If your flight was cancelled due to westher you can apply for a snowflake exception tomorrow

Okay, that’s enough meanness for today. Hey, a CUMULUS!!!

I know someone on the Olympic Sailing committee. He was an olympic contender 10 or so years ago.
