Hi all,
Does anyone know how much distance a wheel lug can extend past the threaded hub plate? By my calculations, the stock lugs are the exact length required to pass through the rim and thread entirely into the hub, but they do not extend past the threaded area.
When installing new lugs do you need to make sure they also end flush on the inside of the hub?
I am in the midst of installing new rims on my '70 Squareback which require longer lugs and because I am using a spacer on the rear, I will have two different sizes. The exact sizes I need are not available.
Buying longer lugs and chopping them down has crossed my mind, but I'd rather not if it isn't necessary.
Curious if anyone else has run into this issue before and if they know what a safe extension length is - if any.

I've run into this before, but it's with my shank style lug nut studs that I use with my 36 spoke Shelby rims. In my case I've found that I have to keep the stud length to 3/16ths of an inch once it's it's inside the hub (about 1/2" of threads sticking out from the shank), or it'll hit the brake springs. What I did was have the drum off, and bolted the rim (and spacer in your case) and see how much I needed to trim the lengths down to. I only say that as your drum side wall thickness might be different, depending on whether you have stock German drums or Brazilian drums installed. In other words, what you might find is that you'll have to custom fit your lugs, spacer, and rim combo. Every rim combo seems different, once you get away from stock. I hope this helps.

Yes, thank you! I had not considered that the hubs differ in thickness. Mine are the originals. Looks like I’ll pull them off to dial it in correctly.
