she withdrew because of her mental health which was causing her to be unfocussed and therefore more likely to have an accident. that's not different 'excuses'.
same as when you're in the wrong mood and working on a car, you end up doing more harm to it or yourself and it's best to call it a day.

I have to say I usually follow the olympics with more interest but this year it does seem to be remote and not relevant somehow. plus what I am seeing reported are the spats, cock-ups and emotional backstories.

She is a distraction to the team. She should return home and seek treatment.

The "twisties" is a real condition. Other gymnasts have confirmed that. And its not like swimming or running for goodness sake...you lose your spatial awareness while doing moves like Biles does and it could be death. Biles reaches her maximum height with her feet at about 10 feet high. Her rotation speed at about 150 rpm, roughly one-third the rate of helicopter blades.

When people start caring more about gestures then they do about their fellow Americans then I guess we have what some people want....a war amongst ourselves. Congratulations to those foreign countries who have aspired to that. I guess they are succeeding.

Nowhere did I say anything about whether her condition was real or not nor did I ever say that any gesture or patriotism was more important than her, or any other competitor’s, personal well-being. I was unaware of Simone’s withdrawal of the GAMES, let alone her reasons for it, get the fuck over yourself.

My initial stance still stands (although the post seems to have been deleted). Sports figures should not be using the arenas & podiums to push their agendas, it’s unfair to their fans, it’s unfair to their teammates, it’s unfair to the team owners, it’s unfair to the leagues, & in the instance of the Olympic Games, it’s unfair to the country & it’s citizens.

No pressure or anything, but if you don't get a gold medal for your personal performance, you "lose", and everyone is watching you.

It's totally their fault that these gymnasts, swimmers, runners, skateboarders, surfers, rock climbers, etc. didn't fully understand the ramifications of being dominant at their sport when they were 6 years old.

Just FYI--
My post was a joking reference to "Nadia's Theme." The melody, originally titled "Cotton's Dream", was written by De Vorzon and Botkin as incidental music for the 1971 theatrical film Bless the Beasts and Children. Two years later, Botkin wrote a rearranged version of the piece for The Young and the Restless; the show debuted on March 26, 1973. The melody was later renamed "Nadia's Theme" after the ABC television network Wide World Of Sports lent the music for a montage of Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci's routines during the 1976 Summer Olympics [1] ; but Nadia never performed her routines using this piece of music. Instead, she used a piano arrangement of a medley of the songs "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" and "Jump in the Line" for their floor exercises.

About one month after the 1976 Olympics, the song was released as a single by A&M Records, with its B-side containing an instrumental of De Vorzon's song "Down the Line". It soared up to number 8 on the Billboard Music Charts by December of 1976, in part because of its association with Comaneci. However, A&M Records failed to credit De Vorzon as the co-writer on the first pressings of the single; he successfully sued the record label for $241,000 USD. The single has never been released on CD.

Other versions of "Nadia's Theme" have been recorded, including a semi-rock version by The Ventures, an easy listening version by Ray Conniff, and David Hasselhoff's rendition for his 1987 album Lovin' Feelings.

A sample of "Nadia's Theme" is the musical accompaniment to the verses of Mary J. Blige's single "No More Drama" from her album with the same name. In the tune, Blige's persona describes her former self as "young and restless". It was also sampled in the Krayzie Bone song "We Starvin" from his album Thug Mentality 1999, and Three 6 Mafia's song Tear Da Club Up '97 from their album Chapter 2: World Domination.

Well I guess Biles should have said she tweaked her ankle instead of being honest about the real reason she withdrew? That way you wouldn't have thought she was "pushing her agenda" right? Unless a sprained ankle would have also been "an agenda" excuse?

Sometimes people lose focus because other things have them needlessly all riled up.

Look at all the elite athletes that end up succumbing to performance pressure.
Many take or have taken performance enhancing drugs to stay at the top.
It's disappointing but ultimately refreshing to see a person like Ms. Biles be honest and true to herself. She put the team first, not cover-up or blame others. Gutsy.

Age and experience are good antidotes to bravery. At some point the brain can't ignore how dangerous an activity is. That isn't mental illness, that is basic survival instinct.

I think she conquered fear of failure a long time ago.

You bang your self up a lot doing gymnastics at that level.

i think that is the difference between knowing when to say when and aging out. my brother in law is a professional athlete who was set to compete in the Olympics until the wuflu made a mess out of everything.

thing is, he has an exit plan and realized at an early enough age he will in fact age out of the world of professional competition. his story is a little different seeing he races sail boats so there's ton of money behind it all.

I have a customer that was always difficult to contact because he was always in some resort-ish area for business. Colorado one week, the Alps another, & so on. Curious, I had to ask what he did for a living & he replied insurance industry. He grew up a skier & mountain biker & he told me that after seeing one friend after another eat it in one extreme sport or another, he decided that he would start selling insurance instead. So now he sells insurance to as many skiers, bikers, parachuters, & wing suiters as possible. His life expectancy shot straight up & he said that he out lived most of his buddies.

Japan won the T3 Subaru swap gold medals but the USA walked off in protest, holding a vW medallion high as they strutted off
