I am getting ready to tune up the new Beetle and can't see all the numbers on the distributor, I took a couple of pictures and am hoping the brain trust here will be able to tell me what I have. Thanks. (yes, i am going to move the fuel filter)

Could be any number of vacuum/mechanical models. Get a mirror so you can post the complete number.

I know not a great job on trying to get the numbers. I went to Harbor Freight and got a mirror and don't seem to be able to get it where it needs to be but I think it has a 31140 and an 034.

Yup... looks like 0231 170 034. You got an SVDA.

Could just be the angle of the picture but, you should verify that you have the correct vacuum canister. The canisters on original "034's" had a vacuum pipe with a slight bend in it and a pull arm number of 579. Your canister appears to be sporting a straight.

Pull the distributor and actually look at the number. It could be a 205T or who knows without actually seeing the stamped number.

I clearly see 170 03 so its not 205T.

Looks like the correct number for a 1974 Federal (non california) model Beetle.

Or it could even be one of these also
0231 170 036 or 0231 170 093
That why remove it clean it all up and actually see the number.

The housing is tall so it has advance weights inside. The cap clip is screwed to the housing, so no way it's a 113 T or any other SVA distributor. There were five different Bosch distributors used by VW that were in the "170" family of SVDA distributors.

The mirror clearly shows "03".
It could be these:

0 231 170 034
0 231 170 036

They both had a SVDA vacuum can on them.
