There's always the Polo 4 cylinder based on a 911 engine.

Fit in the engine bay without trimming either VW sheetmetal or stock engine tin and bolted up to the split case transaxle. I don't think the valve covers would come off without dropping the engine though. |
The 356 valve covers are "trapezoid" shaped, being wider along the top edge than the bottom. The wider top edge at the rear of the covers (at cyl. 2 & 4) interferes with the Beetle's downward-sloping quarter panel bottom edge. I think I remember reading in the Bill Fisher book "How to hotrod VW engines" that you'd need to cut a horizontal notch (shallow right triangle area) into the quarter panel bottom edge to create room for the valve cover to come out with the engine in place.
I searched the gallery for "356 engine" but did not find a shot of a Beetle quarter panel which may have been trimmed as above. You can do this search, find photos of 356 engines in Beetles, then PM the posters to ask their experiences with any body trimming. |
