Spent hours today and got less done then we hoped.
Looked at “popping” in the hardware in the back (various hooks, engine lid cable, etc.). Each a no go for a variety of reasons to the point we said— ok, good enough for the show.
One question that keeps coming up is how to find existent screw holes that lie underneath some new finish piece. Have yet to come up with a good answer.
Tried to see how to fit the wind lace and again it is anything but clear. Here’s our best guess:
But, for now good enough for the show!
So we decided to simply “good enough for the show” pressure fit the side rear panels:
And dash cover (with grill)
There are some pretty convincing hole marks on the underside of the dash pad but we were simply not confident enough to poke them so the grab handle off look is “good enough for the show!”
Then disaster hit:
I was so proud when I found that styrofoam boxes I had could keep the wall mat in the correct shape I didn’t think it through enough to realize that they would stick together.
It does not come off except with acetone which takes the color off as well.
If I recall correctly, these mats are painted with some sort of flexible vinyl paint. Hopefully Luis will get back to us regarding the color code we need to match and we will repaint them.
All this seems just as stressful as any other work I have done on our car. Perhaps more so as this stuff shows and we are under a deadline.

That windlace looks correctly installed to me. I only have experience with what Karmann was doing in August of 62 to go by but windlace and some carpet was tacked in place with little upholstery nails and where they were applied was randomly done. Areas where screws were inserted on the same pieces seem to be more consistent but I have still found variability, at least with the used pieces I have installed. If that area is hidden it's not a problem - I can't remember windlace having obvious tacks which weren't covered by something else. If you were hoping to somehow use the same holes in you sheet metal for new pieces I don't know how you could mark it from the back - it's usually pretty hard to get to the backs of those areas. Good luck - I remember a lot of angst during the installation of those pieces. _________________ RIP HBB (1984-2009)

In most cases I found myself making new holes since what would be obvious was on the outside of the trim. Carpets had more of a fudge factor. Thank you for the confirmation Moogie! Still going to wait on their actual installation but good to know you think we might be on the right track. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

That doesnt look right for a coupe. Its suppose to go all the way to the top, at least on a 1960 it does. Maybe different for a low light. Also there is a bracket at the bottom to hold it in (two screws for that). Then its all nailed in.
Like I said maybe its different for a lowlight but I believe is all the way to the top.
Goes behind on a 1960 to the top
Bracket

Thanks so much for the photos!
We do have the brackets but there is no such chrome piece at the top:

Thanks for chiming in Kev!
Does it somehow go behind the chrome piece on the door jamb?

is your carpet considered oatmeal or charcoal or ? |
Oh boy, guess I am going to have to start knowing the answer to a lot of stuff I never thought about before.
So our car was Cardinal Red, and I believe that the Brilliant Red it is now is supposed to have the same color interior (as per Kev).
The 57 Cardinal Red says the carpet is “grey”:
That said, the other colors listed seem to be different than what we have!
Still think “grey” describes it quite nicely. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

yes yours looks legit grey. carpet looks great in yours. You are scaring me and i may have the old time upholstery/carpet guy not far from here do mine when the time comes. |
It only took four tries— and we punted on the wind lacing.
What’s to be frightened of?
We have decided to do what we think we can and then let a professional take over. For instance, the holes for the rear seat in the parcel shelf clearly do not match the holes in the steel. Pretty sure we would have a mess after we try to poke around so we will leave that to Dwayne (if I can coax him to take it on again) at some later date.
I do know that I am finding it very satisfying to do as much as we can and not simply farm the whole job out. But I guess it all depends on your goals. Pretty sure our car is never going to pass a concourse inspection… _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0
