No problem. So as pictured, I kept the end closest to the rear tyre and used it. I filled in the middle with some spare steel. It all need shaping but it was easier to do.

Nice metal shaping. Turn the heat up on your welder a little. Your leaving lots of cold lap that you then have to grind off. Zap and wait. Keep a wet rag to pat on the weld to cool it down a little quicker. _________________ 63 ghia coupe |

Next is finishing up the right side. Starting at the front with a new repair panel welded in and seam sealed as i'm not going to be able to get in there later. Also had the make a few bits in here. Which from the previous photos of this area is obvious I think.
My dog never leaves. She has a rare talent of being able to throw balls at me all the time. I don't mind expect when doing something delicate.
Outer panel on and didn't give any problems, which was a rare change for once.
Rocker on, these do seem to fight as they are most definitely not the correct shape at the bottom. Using a jack and a piece of wood pushes it up and gets it there just.
Moving onto the rear
The whole bottom was gone from just below the bumper mount (thankfully) so I made the inner piece for behind the wheel and used a repair panel bottom piece. Also the rear mount hole for the bumper was intact (thankfully x2).
A previous post shows the middle step but this is the finished rear.
Thats was 90% of the welding done!! _________________ 1958 Beetle

Great work!! I really envy all of you guys that have the skill to shape metal and weld. I know it's a lot of work, but in the end, saving all these old cars, all brands, but especially AC VW's, really means something!

So next was the floor pan. For some reason I never took a photo inside of the car before it was finished. It's weird sometimes you think you have recorded something you didn't.
Anyway the floor was amazing, it only needed cleaning and surface rust treating inside. This is all that finished
Underneath was a different however. All the underseal had to come off. I assume this was done by the dealer as underneath it all was perfect original paint. This as most will know takes ages and is not the best of jobs to have to do.
This was again only surface, rust the underseal had did its job all these years. Who ever put it on didn't miss a thing which was great and also really annoying because I was under the car for days and days. Very conflicting emotions.
Rust treatment
Then I hit it all with Upol Gravitex with and air gun.
The results
I'm happy with how it all came out. The wheel arches and all the other bits underneath are on the cards but I needed a break from scraping etc. _________________ 1958 Beetle

Yeah the floor is great which I'm very happy about. So next on the agenda was paint/patina blending.
As stated before the idea is preserve and be sympathetic as possible to what came before.
The original colour paprika was hard to find. It seems that if you go and order L452 you get something that doesn't look like paprika at all. So I took some metal that had clear paprika on it to a paint matching place and they got very close to what I needed. I also had some paint mixed up with all the other colours that are on different bits of the car i.e. a lighter red, a metallic blue and some yellow primer. Also just to note the paint was cellulose and clear coat was used at the end.
I guess the trick with matching old paint is don't try to make it perfect. Look at what you have and don't be frightened to get creative with it.
Before blend
After blend
If you can't tell where the original begins and ends, that's the goal.
After a few days I refitted the bumpers.
So with that we are almost upto date with everything. Lots more to do... _________________ 1958 Beetle

I like the idea of mend & blend where required & leave the history/patina of the remaining bodywork - too much history to lose. _________________ -------------------

Nicely done.
The trick is to distress the new paint to the same level as the old, you did a very nice job with it. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Looks good! I'm also enjoying the blend/preserve/repair approach

That sucks I thought from the photos that your car was original paint under the grey primer? _________________ 1958 Beetle

Nice resto job! Having once had a 71 Ghia from new, I always have a little pang of jealousy looking at Ghias, no matter what shape they're in. (Right now I can't afford a nice one, and don't have the space for something like this).
On the bumper guards, I bet they were produced to protect the vulnerable nose of the Ghia. Mine got damaged twice, the second time I never got it fixed, and drove it that way until I sold it
I've had too many people "park by feel" with my A/C VWs... |

Yeah I can see the front being more protected by the massive over riders. But it comes at the cost of looks. _________________ 1958 Beetle

This week my attention hasn't been on the Ghia 100%. I've been fighting with the brakes on my Volvo which turned into a bigger job than expected.
Still I did spend a few days removing more underseal.... This time from the front right front wheel arch.
I managed to find some "surprise" rust. Which I was actually expecting in the usual places, one of the reasons for removing the underseal in the first place. Still both sights of rust were completely hidden behind the underseal. No signs at all of an issue at all which makes you think.
First bit repaired
This is what everything was covered in
All underseal removed
So the right side next. What are the odds of more rust? I'm going for 90% certainty. _________________ 1958 Beetle

Without the under seal it would be worse so there is that. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!
