I always wondered about this too, so I just went down and uncovered my unrestored, original paint 1955 Deluxe Sunroof Beetle produced in June 1955. Here is the City crest of arms on "Martha":
Looks like a four brick, and I love the texture of the blue water in my crest. Well, there's another data point for you all. Now I've gotta dig through all the parts boxes for my project 1957 Beetle Kabriolett and see what that crest looks like!

My old 57 had 28,000 original miles on it. It has a 3 brick hood crest.

The holder may be original but I think the badge is a reproduction, take a couple of clearer picks of the face _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

Looking at yours, I'd say it's an original one.
I've only seen 3-brick repro's. _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

Short story
40 yrs plus ago I gave my brother my 56 oval sedan. He sold the car, but kept the badge, and displayed it proudly in a glass covered coffee table, Id eye each time I visited it, and he always made certian it was still there when I left. LOL.
So forward 35 plus yrs Im back into VW's ..... I oval sedan, 1 oval kabriolet, 2 OG paint 67's.
Now heres the kicker, I just recently purchased a 55 ragtop. Without the emblem! He knew nothing about the purchase. But this Christmas I got a package from him, with that emblem inside
Hes treasured for the past 40+ years...!!!
KARMA ,GREAT BROTHER, JUST STRANGE ..
Thanks the tale.

I'm still lost.. I've had this crest for a bunch of years.. it was on my 57 when I bought it, but the car was a real mutt..
The colors are very ceramic and very sharp. The badge is apparently copper
Definetly nothing on the backside
oh... its a 3 bricker...
???????
