I don't really know where to put this.. But I'll put here with the 911s because it's more about the part rather then the car.

Long story short; found a charcoal canister on the rear right fender well of my SB, took it off since it wasn't connected to anything and I wanna repair it and tube it back up. Part number is 113 201 823 A (With a 1 below the first digit).
It's labeled VW & Audi.

How do I crack this open and repack it or make sure it's even still good? It has an over hang type of lip and I've cracked off all the fender lining crap from it. Brick wall

Isn't it just carbon inside? They aren't really serviceable.

It should be charcoal I'm pretty sure, and it'd be unusual for something with a lid to be unable to be repacked.

Yes...you can repack them. It will probably not be quite as efficient as the original...meaning it may not be effective for a decade or so life span....but it will work fine.

Typically these are filled with a variant of coconut carbon. The granule size is somewhat important...but not enough to greatly matter.

There are many threads on the bay window bus forum about repacking these using fish tank activated carbon...because a lot of those guys are in Calipornia and need their emissions to work to drive.

And no....a used one will not really work. The problem with carbon cannisters is that they get saturated with fuel over time and the time in between laying in some barn somewhere ...any space in the carbon left gets saturated with moisture.

The only way to regenerate the old carbon is to "crack" it with a combination of heat and steam. So throw yours away....and do not get it on you. Its full of fuel. If yours has a lid on one end...check and clean any flap or purge valves or one way valves and repack it with fish tank carbon and you will be fine.

Here is a link n 914 world about replenishing these. And yes...this thread is correct about using the charcoal pellets if you can get them versus the granular fish tank charcoal...but they both work.

By the way.....that is a type 1 VW part # on your part These were used on a variety of cars....from VW type 1 to VW 412, many water cooled VW's....probably a few Porsche as well...and yes...all cars mentioned are VW Audi products.
