More mock up. Tube cut to size and wires ran. Will use "cloth" covered wires for final assembly. Hope to have cylinders & heads by the weekend.

No worries. Been busy Coaching Track & working. Still fiddling with the engine intakes. But I have been enjoying the Volksrod ! Local car show, figure I would enter it and enjoy the day. Over 250 cars on display. I ended up winning a category ! Best Import ! Not bad for a Father & Sons garage build. Now I need a name for this bug.....

Got some garage time today. 1200cc dual carb intakes and bypass filter mounted up. Got the return line plumbed, waiting on oil sender block for feed side. Ended up using 2 40hp intakes to make the duals. Cut off the flanges and used the rest for bends. Took forevere to line up. Cut & measure over and over till it worked !

Been awhile guys. Life can throw a few curveballs ! Will post up my progress later. Got the Poor Mans Formula Vee engine done, ran great ! Built a 1641 dual carb with minor upgrades, running it now. Built a 1641 with a Holley 350 2b with a T-3 Turbo putting that in next. But here she is, all pinstriped up. Updates to follow

Looks awesome. A turbo has plenty of space to fit in a volksrod engine compartment. Will be even cooler.

So…. Here is the Stock 1200 Dual Carb aka PoorMans Formula Vee. Ran this engine for quite awhile. Ran great ! Reasons for retirement will follow, main reason for my time away.

Here it is on the bench before install. Ran well on “bench” test but real world is a different story !

As you can see from the photos I messed around with air cleaners. The pods got pitched. Modified some old air cleaners I had. Worked so much better. The exhaust has a special meaning, get into that later.

With all the engines I have been messing with I needed a stand.

Harbor Freight with the 3 arm stand from here on the Samba.

Used a junk transaxle to cut out the starter portion.

Main power disconnect, on/off ignition switch, oil psi light and remote starter switch. Works great.

Even holds a complete Type4 for my Wesy during a rebuild!

Wife said as long as she is comfortable, she doesn’t care what I do to this Bug. Well no heat makes for a chilly ride in the fall our favorite time of year. So I added heated seats, pad on the back and bottom. Also added USB Ports for phones and auxiliary stuff. Wiring and switches are hidden.

So we rode into winter and parked the old girl. The reason for the lapse in updates is this, we lost or Oldest son Jacob 22 and his fiancé Johana 20 on 4/13/19. They went for a motorcycle ride on a beautiful day, someone took a turn wide it was instant. Not a sob story, we know the are in Gods hands. What a way to go tho. Doing something you love with someone you love ! He had a lot of hours in this car, I really walked away from it. Well a friend of mine had this old school pinstriper stop by. Got me back into playing with the car.

So the next thing was I had to build another engine. That PoorMans Vintage Speed was built with my son Jacob. I didn’t want to run it, seems silly. It sits by my chair in the garage.

So a very good friend of mine gave me a long block 1641. He knew my feelings on the Poor Mans Vintage Speed engine and its ties to Jacob. So took some time and finished it off for the Volksrod.

I made stainless fuel lines, mid mount coil, dual carbs and 40hp shroud. She runs great and looks clean. Been running this engine for awhile now. I am not easy on it at all !

Terrible story about the kids! My heart goes out to you. I'm not sure I could stay with a father / son project like you are.

At first it was hard to do. But a lot of times I use his tools and “feel” connected in a way. My other son also helps, so it’s still a father/son car.

So back to the engine saga. Been running the dual carb 1641 for awhile now. Runs great, but I wanted more. So a 1641 Turbo sounds good, right ! Got it from a friend in our VW Club. It was a fresh rebuild, he never ran it. So I just had to “dress” it up. Holley 350 2 barrel with a T3 turbo draw thru. Waiting for my AEM AFR system to show up.

My condolences to the op. Almost exactly a year ago our neighbor lost there only child who was an amazing young man a few days from turning 17. Single car accident, no passengers, died instantly. They still do weekly grief counciling and I hope the op’s family is getting help. It’s an impossible situation.

I was reading this great 7 page build to keep my mind occupied while sitting in my wife’s room in the memory care wing of a senior living facility. She was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in Dec 2020. Been under hospice care for a full year.

There are a lot of us in sad situations so don’t feel alone. Heck!!! Today is the 7 year anniversary of the life altering surgery to cut a cancerous tumor from my GI tract ( now known as “the hate factory” Smile ).

Best wishes!

Rayjay, thank you for the kind words. We are and have been getting help. In the form of running a GriefShare group thru our church. To help others out in the same situation is therapy for us. As I type this I am thinking “I need to get back to work on this car!” I think your post may have lit a fire under my butt !
