Well about 2 months on and Gary has it all straightened.
He will spray out an original can of VW L330 and then color match it.
I went out to verify the trim holes.
We dropped off the clean pan for him to start. They are really a collision shop set up in an old Dodge dealership. In 1969 in rural PA they sold more Hemis out of this dealership than any other.
The rear lid on the wall is from a new highly optioned early 60s Chrysler Imperial. The owner hated the look of the continental kit so they bought a new flat one and installed it for the owner. They trunk lid never saw any use.

Thanks just standard lawn mower wheels using stock shock bolts to get around the garage and on/off trailer. _________________ http://karmannghias.org/

The genius was in the flipping over of the chassis. I doubt anyone ever thought of it

Well, about a year later and we are getting back to the Ghia at the paint shop.
Good news he said the Superbird went for $300K at the auction so the Ghia should be top notch.
Since I found 3 NOS cans of VW paint we sprayed one out on the card and then they went to two suppliers to match the formula and spray it out. We picked the Sikkens paint. Match is excellent and I would believe this is the best reproduction of Trout Blue color to date.
I drove to the shop today to sign off on the color and gave the go ahead to finish!
Yes they did paint the 58 Grill I gave them as the 56 is warped. Going to the 3D printer this week and lets see if they can do the original 3 row style.

Are you going to try to find material to match the paint color for the Webasto top? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

The bolsters on the seats are dark blue so we are going to look at a dark blue canvas is the first thought.
For what ever reason I contacted SewFine 27 years ago and sent them my seats and door panels as patterns. They didn't have any 56/57 offerings at the time maybe 1994. They came back nice. Hope they fit. They used a thicker card so I will have to modify the snaps somehow. I also have to figure out how to put the trim pieces on the bottom.
So far the mice didn't seem to find the fabric after all of these years..... The grey is an exact match. Sorry for the yellow lighting.
Hey, you joined the Samba 1 day before me, go figure..

Wow, that’s a terrific color. I’m pleased to see this project moving forward. I think the dark blue top will be elegant and classy. I will suggest finding the top canvas first, then matching the interior to it. Canvas color selections are much more limited than interior materials.
PS: I hope they are going to fix the radio opening _________________ Jack Staggs

Well the interior was done 25 years ago so let's hope we find a roof match.
The dash is a good story. The original radio was added at the dealership. It actually has Volkswagen on the dial! The spacing was different so they snipped the metal. It has a cover plate so I will do the same.
I have not seen another radio with the Volkswagen silk screened on the dial. It works, I had to find another vibrator for it. (edit) i think the crispino's original might have one. (edit 2) hers was an automatic but mounted different.
Joyce's radio

Yeah, that’s a cool radio, with the 2 CD (civil defense) triangles required by the CONELRAD system, who also gave us the atomic bomb explosion duck and cover maneuvers. I’ve actually seen a couple those exact radios over the years, as the CD markings were retired just a few years ago, in 1963.
Oh, we sometimes could bring a recalcitrant vibrator back to life by applying a slightly higher voltage, say 8 or 9 volts briefly and tapping lightly if so inclined. The other most common problem in the tube radios of that era is failure of the 50C5 tube.

And we both have 56 Ghias with vintage performance 36hp engines (mine has an original Okrasa kit) And Webasto sunroofs, at least I have a clip sitting on the side of the garage theoretically going into a 63 coupe I picked up. If you say you are a retired teacher then I’m going to be scared.
My plan is to find canvas or vinyl to match the blue white roof mostly because I want to camouflage the top as I don’t like the way it detracts from the flowing roof line of the car when closed. Matching it to the interior is also a good idea. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Fantastic. Too many coincidences. I am an engineer, but like to teach. Post a pic of the Webasto. _________________ http://karmannghias.org/

That's fascinating a did not know this. If you have time everyone listen to the explanation from the 50s of the radio used in the Cold War era on the link. Here is a brief explanation.
"First, provide public information. In the event attack, leaders saw radio as the major communications medium with their citizens, just as in World War II. All radio broadcasting would operate on two frequencies – 640 and 1240 kHz. Listeners would tune to these channels for instant and continuous information and instructions.
Second, confusing direction finding. Regional clusters of stations would take turns broadcasting on these frequencies, switching regularly. As a result, the enemy would not be able to home in on transmitters because they kept moving around. Typically, each station in the cluster would turn on, broadcast for 5 to 40 seconds, and then turn off, with a different station taking over. The cycle would last from 3-6 minutes. Programming was done over phone lines, so it remained the same no matter which station was switched on. Power had to be reduced and often pulsed.
More than 1200 AM radio stations signed up for the scheme. They made investments for transmitter control and synchronization. Stations which did not sign up, and all FM/TV broadcasters, had to leave the air for the duration of the emergency."

Getting closer. Last week they finished the main body and underneath. I guess my rotisserie was useful to them.
I might have to store the DUKW someplace else if she comes home in the fall to have enough room to finish her. They need to get me the chassis first.

Recently got the pan back. It came out great. This pan is the original with only two small repairs. This is a March of 1956 Karmann Ghia.
The rims came out good as well. They were all date coded to the car and are of the style that require tubes (no flat embossed area for the valve stem).
The hub caps will have the body color logo. Has anyone made a template to be able to spray the logo?

Wow..what a great car that is going to be ..finally
About painting the logo in the hubcaps Jeff - it is really simple.
Just spray over the logo (no masking needed) directly on the chrome
After 5-10 minutes you take some thinner on a cloth and wrap it around
a sanding block and simply buff over the logo.
The thinner will take away all the paint except in the logo.
Done it many times myself and it´s very easy.
Good luck! |
