I have had several ovals in my life and not one of them had luggage bars either on the seat back or in the luggage compartment. On my current oval, an early 55, I see no sign of even being able to install them in the luggage compartment.

Can someone shed some light on this mystery? Were they a factory accessory? If not, how do they attach?

Thx!

I believe 54’ was the last year for luggage rails, factory that is. Some say early 55’ but I’ve seen no evidence, so if you don’t have the two captive nuts along the bottom radius of the tray, then it didn’t come with luggage rails.

That makes sense. Mine is as early as you can get and it does not have captive nuts or hold-downs at the top of the luggage tray. One less thing to worry about.

Did they come on the seat back?

According to Progressive Refinements, the luggage rails were deleted on 23 August 1954, at Chassis No. 1-0698300.

Does that include luggage compartment and back of seat?
I assume it would but have seen luggage rails on the back of the seat in later cars. I am assuming they were owner added…

Thanks for the info!

The seatback rails continued to be used long after the luggage compartment rails were eliminated.

Not sure the copy from the ad is correct. In fact I'm pretty sure it isn't. I think the above info from Progressive Refinements is most probably correct. I have a perfect original paint US spec unmolested and unrestored June of 1955 Oval Sunroof and it has no luggage rails on the carpet in the luggage area.
