Yeah there is no wire to the speedo except for the one to the bulb for nighttime illumination. The speedometer/odometer is 100% mechanical. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

shouldn't have one. got pics? did maybe someone add a ground wire? |
That would be my guess as well, especially if the speedo unit wasn't seated in place (you wouldn't have a ground). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

My dude. You said speedo but the pic you have posted is not of the speedo, it is of the fuel gauge/warning light cluster.
So, let us speak precisely, yeah? Cuz the speedo = the speedometer which is a different thing.
So, from the pic you have posted, the green/white wire looks to have been installed where a black wire should be. The black wire would be the power supply to that cluster, connecting to the fuse box as per the wiring diagram (see wiring diagram to learn which fuse it's supposed to connect to). Why the wire was replaced with green/white, who knows. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Damn! I know it. Been doing this long enough you’d think a ridiculous mistake like that would not happen. Telling you… this heat is stifles the brain.
Thank you |

It's possible that the PO was color blind, and just worked with 1 wire at a time. I've ran into that before. A friend of mine repaired a section of the rear harness with red wire (all he had), and being color blind, just worked 1 wire at a time and made it work. Sometimes you have to work with what you have. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hang on a sec.......I pulled off the warning light cluster connector from a Nov '62 Notch, and it has 2 factory wires that exit from that hole:
Black = 15 = ignition controlled power to the fuel gauge & gen & oil pressure & 2 turn signal warning lights.
Green with white tracer = input to the twin turn signal warning lights.
There are variations over the years, so it may be best to pull the connector and inspect the wiring on the inside. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"
