I have a 76 Super Beetle. Can anyone tell me if the thrust washer is installed correctly? I'm not even sure what it does, to be honest.

That washer is not really needed, but can be used as a dust shield. It used to have a rubber boot covering the both ends of the u-joint shaft and the large end went over the washer.

That metal washer is there to prevent the steering shaft being pushed towards the driver in case of an impact / accident. It is safety related .

Thanks for the help! The safety function makes sense.

Will those boots work on a 76? What does the large end attach to?
