|
|
A few years ago, someone who was (is?) active on this forum made some gray plastic (of some sort) screens and an insert for Westy skylights.
I have one and, in general, it's doing just fine. Problem is (isn't there always a problem to start a thread?), the screen frame has taken a set and is now curved just enough to bugs, otherwise screened out, a side door into the cabin.
The question is, what's the best way to straighten, or maybe even put in a slight reverse curve in the frame? _________________ Lord, give me coffee to change the things I can change, and wine to accept the things I can't change. |

Uh, he was here on July 19, so I'm not sure he's "done". Yet. _________________ Lord, give me coffee to change the things I can change, and wine to accept the things I can't change. |

A heat gun, to get it to the shape you want, and hold that "curve", and then dump cold water on it. |

I just got a reply. Still sorting out "how hot is too hot".
Otherwise, reversing the bend, from convex to concave based on looking from the side of the installed frame, works well. The frame is supported only on two opposing sides. Get a concave curve, draw up the mounting hardware, and the (now sagging) sides are drawn into place.
The trick is to get just enough bend. It's always something... _________________ Lord, give me coffee to change the things I can change, and wine to accept the things I can't change. |

i messaged him (and he read it) as well as emailed him when he had an ad up:

anyway he never replied to me or others, so i'd say he's done or at the very least isn't answering people.
seems like he had an interesting idea but used shit materials _________________

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |

Whoa!
Easy guys!
Let's put the pitch forks and torches down, we aren't hunting Shrek here.
When he stopped making his screens he mentioned he was retooling for a different product.
I don't have any idea what it is/was.
I actually purchased one of the very last ones he made.
I loved it!
It fit well,
It solved my screen issue
And it stopped my annoying skylight rattle that was previously the task of a folded McDonalds french fry box I wedged in there somewhere out Dakota way.
He did/does have reports of heat issues affecting the product which I don't know if they can be fixed. (I do have my thoughts on how to possibly fix them)
I don't have an answer on how he should proceed addressing this past problem.
As far as I know, he offered no warranty and as we all know, crap happens.
No malice was intended I'm sure.
He's not Cisco with unlimited funds I'm sure.
He's just a member who had a great idea.
If he does start back up I think he should switch to aluminum sheets.
It will drive the price up significantly, but it will be a lifetime product.
Let's not play Judge, Jury and Executioner here.
We simply don't know many bits of information.
Let's follow the link above, no need to do this yet again.
