Here is something that I can't find an answer for years.
I am researching in the details of the rain gutter area design.
How have these parts been welded ? In what order ?
some old factory shots show that the side panels (green)were completely spot welded with the lower raingutter section. what about the hat shaped bracing (purple)? judging from old drawings this only should be a short piece over the cargo doors, but my 54 seems to have this on both sides from b pillar to the rear corners. and how did they put on the top ? it seems the top is welded continously to the rain gutter (pressure roll welding ??)
did they first build the complete side panel construction incl rain gutter and reinforcement hat channel and then weld on the roof panel on the assembled lower body struture ?
how is everybody restoring this area ?
most of the full BD restos are panel by panel so how's the roof going back on ?

that purple boxed part is not actually boxed. the drawing is correct on the right edge but the left(roof edge) goes to the roof and then down pinched with the roof line.
it is spot welded to the roof and in my experience with the roof to the drip rail is either many many tightly spaced spot welds or possibly as you said, continuous weld. when i had to remove sections it was a lot of grinding to remove the roof skin.

The purple bit is also only spot welded along the inside edge, on the outside where it goes down to the roof gutter at 45 degrees it stands slightly proud of the blue part. I did have some photos of one sliced through for reference, I'll see if I can dig them out. _________________ To catch a fish, you must first think like a fish.... |

Thanx guys for all that detailed info, that resto album provides great detailed pics!!!
Now I understand the building process.
They spot welded the rain gutter to the side panels.
They spot welded the (nearly)hat shaped reinforcement channel to the roof skin. so they got two seperate stiff body parts and after assembling the lower body structure they put on the roof structure and spot or continously welded it to the lower rain gutter.
so now I understand why all the rust through is about 1 cm above the rain gutter. that's where the inner bracing channel starts....what a great cheap and useful design for the building process. what a fucking shitty crap for rust repair !

There isn't any trace of sealant in the gutters on my 52 either. I'm pretty sure there wasn't any used on barndoors _________________
