Do all Things have the “Hecho En Mexico” stamped on the tunnel? I’ve seen it on other Things, but do not see it on my ‘73, granted it’s rather pitted in that area and one can barely make out the VIN.

I was wondering the same thing. I do not see it on my 73 and can easily see the vin#.

Not all 181s were made in Mexico however the majority of the 181s in the US today were "Hecho en Mexico".

In addition to the words "Hecho en Mexico" stamped ion the tunnel and in the VIN plate under the hood, the letter "E" at the end of the VIN designates that it was built for export and in the case of most Things in the US the E signifies export to the US.

Could it be a difference between ‘73 and ‘74? Mine was definitely made in Mexico and it has the ‘E.’

Third digit of the VIN indicates "model year". All if not most US imports (73 and 74) should have the "Hecho in Mexico" stamp.

Semper Dad...the first apron plate picture you posted shows the car was made in Mexico but there is no (export) E after the vin. Do you think that means it was made to be sold in Mexico?

Honestly, I don't think the apron plate has the "E", Just the chassis. I'll check and update tomorrow.
