All,
I have a 1969 Beetle with a chassis number that defies any decoder chart that I have been able to find. The VIN:
119195518
The charts indicate that for 1 Aug 1968 - 31 July 1969 lie within the range of 119000000 - 119120000 (9 digits)
Following this range, we see the range of 1970 which then becomes 10 digits, 1102000001 - 1103100000.
Why can't I find my chassis/VIN number in any published chart? Does this indicate possibly the vehicle was manufactured between 1 Aug 1969 and 31 Dec 1969? |

Per the VIN chart, I am seeing an August of 68 build date. _________________ Come on, It's not rocket science. KISS |

No, the digits in the VIN number exceed the last digits of the range for August 1968. |

Raydog - thanks. I see it now. Note, I was referring to charts such as this:
https://www.bughaus.com/model_identification_-_Type_1.htm
Look on the line here for 1969 - saw this same chart everywhere. I found one published that has more complete ranges on Samba that answers the mystery and you are right. |

Yeah, I see what you did. The new 10th digit is 4th in line. It's like going from 999,999 to 1,000,000. _________________ Come on, It's not rocket science. KISS |

Have you looked at the Type1 VIN table in the technical section of this site?
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
Scroll down to May/June of 1969. You can see where the last VIN in May 1969 was 119 942 556 (9-digit) and the last VIN in June 1969 was 119 1 040 194 (10-digit). So sometime in June 1969 the VW factory(s) reached 1-million cars in the same model year and rolled into the need for 10-digit VINs from there forward.
From Aug 1969 (1970-model year) the 4th digit of the VIN started from 2 and not 0. This is important when they reached 1979. 10-digit VINs starting with 1190- or 1191- means it is a 1969 model year. 10-digit VINs starting with 1192- are the 1979 model year. _________________ AshMan40
