I'm trying to figure out a fuel issue on my engine. I have tried 2 different pumps and neither seem to be picking up fuel. Below is a picture of the pumps that I have available. 2 are Peirburg (VW stamped) and one is a Brosol clone. I've tried the Brosol and the domed cap Peirburg. The domed cap pump, I can actually hear it move air when I actuate it myself and the inside of the pump is clean. So I would think it should work. The pump rod measures 107.77 mm. Is that sufficient? I see various lengths mentioned online. The pump rod does move up and down when cranking the engine over. I'm tempted to just say "screw it" and get a small electric pump, but just didn't want the headache of wiring it right now. I need something that will work with 2 DRLA 40 carbs.

What was on the engine to start with?
The longer rod is for generator style pump and the shorter rod is for alternator style pump. The generator style pump has the cross pin mounted lower and the generator style has the cross pin mounted higher.
Must use the correct rod with the correct pump. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Those all look like generator style pumps and use a 108mm rod. _________________ Glenn

They should all be generator style pumps, as the arm doesn't extend past the mounting base. I thought I had originally used the Brosol pump before since it's the newest (but that was 20+ yrs ago), but it didn't seem to be pulling in fuel. So I tried another pump that I had lying around. I had an additional pump rod
and both are the same 107.77 mm in length. I guess there is the possibility that the engine isn't spinning fast enough while cranking to generate sufficient suction. I just have the feed fuel line going down into a gas can, so it's got to lift the gas about 2 ft up or so. _________________ Joe P.

Is Simple
All you have to do is look at the bottom of the base
If is recess IN. Take the longer Rod
If is Flush with the Base takes the small
And also means is NOT a type 3
And NOT an Original
I remember when Reproduction Fuel Pumps were available
At auto parts stores and the short ROD was included _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic

the electric is your best option for the Dells, buy a 2.5-3psi pump and be done. and you won't have to worry about heat soak on the pump with the electric.
With the stock pump, you will have to confirm the pump output pressure, it can be from 2psi -12psi on aftermarket pumps _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Yeah, the thought had crossed my mind about that. I was just trying to keep things simple for the time being since the car isn't ready to be driven just yet. I may try lifting the gas can higher so it's more gravity feed into the pump to see if it helps for this test running. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't doing something stupid and using the wrong parts or something for this. Otherwise I will just go for the electric pump and call it a day. _________________ Joe P.

Don’t use any of those 3 you have
This is the one you need _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic
