|
|
I have a 1968 fuel tank (with the oval-shaped filler opening) but none of hoses I have appear to be original, and I'm not sure they are hooked up correctly. I've tried looking around, but I can't seem to find any specific information about the hoses and setup required on the 1968-tank because it was a 1-year only. I would like to buy all new hoses, and get them hooked up right! |

There is only 1 page in the GALLERY about 68 only tanks and it's a homemade venting layout

You sir are in luck. I just replaced all the lines in my early '68 today.
Here are pics. I hope they include what you are looking for.
Make sure to replace the fuel hose under the tank and between the tranny and firewall.
I also moved my filter from the engine compartment to just under the tank.

Thanks! Now I'm confused, because while my tank has the whole on the lower right side of the picture (where the metal line? goes through) it has been blocked off, but doesn't look like it will open. Is it required? |

Post a pic of your tank and the blocked off area.
How would you vent your tank without that hole? I suppose you could vent it through the filler neck but if that was sufficient, I imagine that VW would have designed it that way.
Your tank holds 10.6 gallons of fuel. Fuel is combustible. Given how close it is to the passenger compartment and its convenient location at the front of the car, I personally would not mess with any "modifications" in this area. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

My 68 has doesn't use the "crossover pipe" as his is showing. Instead it has a smaller nipple just beside the main tank fill inlet that the cloth tube would connect to instead. A small vent hose runs from the cloth hose TEE back up behind the dash and around to the other side and down through a hole near the front apron. |

Here are a few pics from my late 68...bottom right hole in tank is plugged as well. Let me know if you need a different angle, I may have the shot. The last picture with the small hose to the right of the gas tank exiting the trunk is the small hose that vents from the filler area (connects to smaller hose between tank and filler hole.
Hope it helps! _________________ '68 Bug

Thanks guys. I have a ghetto setup with the small nipple next to the filler hole going up to the T. Here are my pics, it isn't a pretty trunk because PO didn't have the sending unit screwed in tight!

The nipple on your "T" should be pointed up, not down.
That way, if any fuel comes through your overflow vent, it won't dribble down your vented line.
Easy fix, just twist your "T" so that the small port is facing up.
(I know this is an old thread, I was just looking for info on Fuel lines, and saw this.)
