Wow - a whole lot of non-useful replies there...
That hose, which is often missing, attaches to the drain at the bottom of the air box, as has been pointed out. The other end of it is to be fished vertically through a hole in the body directly below. That way water that gets into the airbox (like from driving in the rain) gets neatly diverted to the road below, just in front of the splash pan.
It actually is an important connection. Without it, water gets put into the space forward of the kick panels, and may or may not find its way to the drain hole.
AFAIK, all buses have these, or at least did have them. |
So you are saying the exit hole for the tube is directly below that spigot?
I didn't find one there but I did feel a hole that felt like the right size over by the steering box. I'll look again.
I have no idea why my spigot is so crunched. |

What a perfect photo for that!
That's interesting. It seems that they moved the hole from over the steering box more towards the middle. My experience is based on '73 and later buses. Hoses are not that long, and would not allow for water to collect in the hose like that one.
I guess the answer is to just feel around until you find the damned hole!
You know, somewhere (and this may already exist) we need a comprehensive list of what all changed and when for the Bay Window Bus. All the way down to little details like this. _________________ John

I agree...these are the little changes that the Bay's went through. I wonder if my 79' has this same drain hole...I know the front end clip was replaced. _________________ 1979 Westy, Mexico Beige, 2.0 FI, Petronix, KYLE Fuel Injection Harness upgrade.

If would make sense that if you have nose vents there is some sort of drain in the system. |

I think the relocation of the hose towards center corresponds with when the splash pan (pedal cluster cover) receieved a large hole, approximately the diameter of the hose in question. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

I went to Home Depot and got this hose in WHITE.
BRAND: EVERBILT
6ft BILGE AND PUMP DISCHARGE HOSE
+5*F to +150 *F
1-1/8" ID
upc is 8 11000 01190 9
is on the label
I cut the good ends off of my 50 year old hose and those pieces entered nice and firmly into this hose.
I suppose if you did not have a crappy one with holes in it, you could still make this one work... $8-ish, IIRC _________________ My Toys: '75 Porsche 914, '92 Ski Nautique and now a 1972 VW Transporter Deluxe (punch list fixing) |

I ran into this issue many moons ago on my '69 singlecab. original plastic was all beat up cracked etc.
There was no repro made - I found a washing machine drain hose works great, just about the same size. _________________ -Kevin

Thanks for the part number, made it easy to find on the Bus-OK website.
