I put a new type Bosch voltage regulator on my '69 Ghia that has a generator. When I connected the battery the generator got hot at the brush area. Engine is not ready to start yet to test output at generator or regulator. I have 12 volts at the regulator B+ which is connected to the battery and also 12 volts at the D+ which is connected to the generator. I cannot find information about a regulator test other than output from the generator and nothing about testing or checking the 4 regulator connectors for positive or negative readings.
Why is there a 12 volt reading at my D+ ? I would think there would be voltage there only when the generator is turning. _________________ Present VW-'69 Ghia Coupe

You may need to wait 'till you can run the motor to fully troubleshoot the charging system. Here's some info to get you started: http://www.vw-resource.com/generator.html
Check to make sure all the wiring is connected properly. This is a wiring diagram for a '69 Ghia: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/ghia_67_USA.jpg _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Thank you. Very helpful information. Just removed a T4 engine and getting the 1600 back together so may be awhile to properly test.
I did the generator test briefly and it does motor.
Still not sure why there is 12 volts at the generator when it is not turning with fan belt.
If someone could test theirs and there is not 12 volts there I believe my regulator is bad and I can get one in the mean time. _________________ Present VW-'69 Ghia Coupe

If everything's wired up correctly, and you have 12V at D+ with the motor off, you're right about that regulator. Probably frozen contacts somewhere inside. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)
